A friend of mine recently finished a 4' x 8' MDO sign for a new business in town. He painted the panel (I think he used some kind of a gloss latex) then put down some printed graphics (3M IJ180C, laminated). After a month, he said the vinyl is all lifting off the panel! Any ideas about what's causing the vinyl adhesive and painted panel to react that way? I've got a call into him to get specifics on the paint he used.

control tac adhesive should be applied dry... according to 3M recommendation Did you use application fluid?

I've had vinyl-not-sticking problems recently. First I thought it was the Sintra panel. Then I couldn't get the stuff to stick to a painted panel either. Gerber Vinyl High Performance. Bought late last year. Tomato Red, Black and White...

by the way. All my attempts were dry applied. AND... I had decals made that was a non Gerber vinyl. They stuck OK on the same Sintra panel that Gerber did not....

Hmmmm. Not sure if it was a dry application -- I'll ask him. I found out he also used a 1shot clear coat (spray) on everything.

Latex? That's your problem. Sorry Charlie.

He confirmed for me that it was a dry application, but I think Ricky is right about the latex! That's probably the problem.

i would think that the one shot clear over the vinyl and latex would be damaging for sure. why would he do that?

I always have problems with vynull adhering well to latex. The latex paint almost seems "greasy" and the lettering wants to come up with the app tape, even when I get brave and stick it dry. I only use 1-Shot or Ronan for backgrounds now. Love....Jill

Latex paint doesn't take well to vinyl graphics.
If you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO USE LATEX PAINT, let it get good and dry, then a medium coating of OS UV Clear over the paint gives you a better surface to apply vinyl to. A dry application works well, but if the lettering tries to come up when removing the application tape, try dampening it a little with Rapid Tac...just enough to break down the app tape adhesive a little and make it release easier.
Hope this helps... Rapid

yes,, latex.. It has to be at least gloss latex and then your takin a chance. I had a customer insist on using his painted boards for some of his stuff. Of course it was latex and of course I told him it may not stick. And of course it lifted around the edges.

When I saw the post, all I could think of was to bend at the knees when lifting vinyl.
You won't hurt your back!

Maybe when lifting a 54" roll Gene!
Good replies, all. He's going to redo a couple of quick panels with 040 aluminum and reface the sign for the customer. And, in the future, NOT use latex paint!

Paint it.

Moist surface is the problem. In winter, no matter how long latex is left to cure, it will have a wet area under the vinyl that will create problems. It may feel dry on the surface but next to the substrate the adhesion is not controled. Any moist particles are still advancing to the top of the paint and wetting the vinyl adhesive. Use oil base and keep it warm.

If he sprayed or coated the vinyl with 1Shot clear and put it on too thick, that would also cause it to peel off.
