We have a project in the works which is similar (in functionality anyhow) to the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill. If you are not familiar with The Big Taste Grill, here are some photos.
It will be similar in the fact that there will be a gas grill contained within a mobile cover, or container if you will, very similar to the way this one is set up. Only on a smaller scale. The cover will be made of carbon steel. It may possibly be subjected to some heat, however we don't think it will get very hot unless someone closes it right after they shut off the actual grill and the remaining heat in the grill builds up. 99% of the time it will be open and in no closer proximity to the grill than the one in the pictures above. We don't know whether to use a hi temp paint, or just an automotive paint such as base clear with a hardener or do a vinyl wrap or what. I am leaning towards the automotive paint as I cannot see this thing getting much hotter than the trunk lid on a black car in the sun on a 100 degree day.....
we may have to do some testing before paint day but I thought I'd throw it out to all of you fine people for an honest opinion first.
Also, I don't know if there are any prep differences between carbon steel and mild steel. should one use a self etching primer or anything?

Paint sounds expensive and something a body shop would have to do...and a lot of them have their own sign making plotters to make patterns...so where do you fit in?
HP ControlTac with Comply or comparable would be my choice. Same if they need digital 4k prints.

Actually, a good friend of mine is going to be building this in his welding/fabrication shop. He has lathes, mills, a computer controlled plasma cutter etc.
I will not only be doing the graphics, but also the design work. His computer skills are non existant. I can actually design parts and pieces in corel, and export them to his plasma cutter, and make perfect parts and pieces. Its kind of a refreshing change of pace for me. And, I love a challange.
I'm just worried that the vinyl would blister if the wrong conditions were encountered. And as far as the paint, it could be easily accomplished in his shop, and we have another "team member" who is a lifelong body man, not to mention, I have painted a car or two in years gone by. I can do all of the design and stencils for paint in house.
Or, maybe this would be my best excuse to get a versacamm! hey, now theres a thought.

I checked out that Big Taste Grill down here at our last Blue Angels show... That thing is a super cool piece of work. The design was very well thought out... made me want to go home and build a huge grill..
On a 100 degree day, it'd have a lot of heat, smoke and fumes with that grill going about 3 ft below it... I'd be a little worried about vinyl. If you do use vinyl, I'd stay away from Avery A4...
