I was looking for some CorelDRAW X3 info and went to their News Group. I stumbled on the post that I cut and pasted below. So I got all worked up and tried my best to educate the poster on what he was doing. To make a long story short... in the end, someone pointed me to www.no-spec.com What a great website.

John

THE POST:
I usually do most of the design work for my customers but am starting to get behind.

I've tried the logo for hire a couple times with mixed reviews - somethime the cust loves them - others - not so well... therefore sometimes I make $ sometimes I don't

I have started having a couple designers submit logos - and whichever the customer picks is who the job goes to- fine tune then get paid.

This is working better - sometimes cust likes all of them and buys them all just in case he changes mind - othertimes it's back to the drawing brd.

I've found this works good because the good designers stuff gets picked about 3/4 of the time - and the others don't - so the good designers stick it out and seem to be making $ - the others get practice and do seem to get better -

However - it would be nice to get a lil more variety as sometimes some designers stuff all looks alike - and sometimes I only get 2 ideas - and I'd really like 5-7

Usually I also end up having the winner design the business card too - as it's fast and easy (all 4 color work)

If you are interested in this (and occasionally once a logo is picked we may hire for an entire brochure etc.) please shoot me an email - lets get something going

all work must be created in CDR - not just importable INTO cdr - as sometimes I have to tweek here before printing etc.

Logos tranfer fast over net so I don't care where you are from - however any designers from Buffalo or Rochester NY area using corelDraw - please contact me regardless as I need someone to hire for other bigger projects.

thanks!

I had a repeat client the other day who called me up telling me how she was the director of such an such organization & because she really liked the design work I did for her before... she wanted to make sure I knew about the design contest for their new logo.

She said something about their need to come up with a logo & design work incorporating that logo into biz cards, letterheads, t-shirts.... etc. etc. etc...

The prize was $1000 "and the chance to do all our work"

I told her it was worth $1000 & I would do it for 50% up front... but I was way way too busy getting paid what I'm worth to play games trying to "win" this opportunity.

I probably should have tried to not exude quite so much resentment, but I couldn't help it.

Well Mark,

Find a few more dancers to come over so we can audition them, and pay the best one. [Smile]

Yeah, I remember a few years ago there was a site called E-Lance that was pretty much the same thing. I did 2 maybe 3 logos for different "companies" and then thought to myself, "I don't know these companies, so if they did choose my layout, what would stop them from just using them and not paying?"

I watched the site for a couple of months, then they started charging the designers to bid on the work.

That was the biggest joke that I ever heard of..
