As a signpainter turned engraver, I thought I should inform you all about a website which is a great resource for all things scroll. It is: FEGA The Firearms Engravers Guild of America. It has a section on books and tapes which are most helpful as well as members works. I would also recommend a new book my engraver Ron Smith. Enjoy. Otto

What beautiful detail!
All the engraving I saw there was on firearms though. I remember seeing engraving on knives that Von Dutch did that was equally stunning. And on dashboards, boxes, and jewelry. There used to be engraved plaques to ID objects of quality and as memorials. So much of what was treasured handwork has been synthesized by machines. I guess that finding a computerized means of accomplishing anything is Americas favorite sport now. Otto, welcome to Letterville, and your work is killer.

Just received the book on "More Scroll Designs"- very pricey, but more than I ever thought possible in designing and drawing scrolls- absolutely gorgious reference work! Cat

Frank, Thanks but that's actually snakeskin, not fishscales. But you're not the first one to say that. But really there's not that much difference in the way they're built. Yes, the shading on the scales is stippling. The shading on the scrolls are lines.
