quote:The company unveiled a new brand logo Tuesday that includes bolder colors and a more well-defined visage of the late Kentucky Fried Chicken founder, who will keep his classic black bow tie, glasses and goatee.
As part of publicity for the new logo, KFC commissioned a giant, 87,000-square foot version of it that can be seen from space. The massive logo consists of 65,000 1-foot square painted tiles that were laid out in the Nevada desert over 24 days.
My town just had a hissy-fit over granting a 300 sq.ft. sign. LOL! Imagine trying to get a permit for this one!

It's Nevada, what do ya expect? Anything goes!

Hehehe....the first thing I'd expect is an environmental impact report, then fill out a variance application, shell out a few bucks for attorney's fee......

I understood that this was done so as it could be seen from space as the first commercial business to do so, ya folla me?

Environmental impact report.. hahaha... you're setting baked dirt down on top of... sunbaked dirt.. out in the middle of nowhere.. in a state where prostitution is legal and politics pave the way for huge hotels and casinos to bring in the green. Environmental impact?? LOL.
Nevada is enjoying record growth and encouraging it by sidestepping red tape!.. and income taxes (yeah that's right, no income taxes) and letting developers do pretty much whatever they want.

Then again, I can go to Google maps and see my Jeep parked in the backyard so technically that's visible from space too. The question is...how many people in space are actually gonna land in a KFC parking lot?

But Mike, you know we must do everything to protect the endangered spotted wererabbits!

I'm just curious how they got an 87,000 sq.ft sign out of 65,000 x 1 sq. ft tiles

At least the alien invaders will know where to pick up a bucket of chicken.
ummmmmmmm... Let's just hope the aliens aren't highly evolved chickens. If they are, that sign could start an interstellar incident. Rapid

At $1.50/sf I doubt any of my local communities would mind issuing the permit.

That puzzled me too... They're probably counting the length times the height....like we do with fancy shaped signs.

Looks like they gave old Coloned Sanders a face lift! He looks like a yuppified bearded Andy Warhol now! Is nothing sacred? Love....Jill

I'm with Wayne on this... the negative space around the neck was counted in the 87K (for Glenn's permit... knowing how Gov't always counts negative space)
Posted by Rusty Bradley (Member # 6938) on :
hey....let's not put "negative space" down...some of my best work is in "negative space"...and I've made a lot of money charging for it too
Posted by David Harding (Member # 108) on :
As soon as I figure out how to charge for jobs that are 100% negative space, I'll retire.

why get a permit its so big inspector couldnt tell what it is anyway....it aint like hell be flying ove rit. And plus something like this would only confuse the county permit office. they got me listed uder luane signs....I have no idea what the hell that is but its cheap so ill go along with it

Since it's not meant to be viewed by passing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, it's not considered "on premise" signage. So, a sign permit wouldn't be required.
Havin' fun,

Sometimes I think the government IS negative space...or at least FULL OF IT!

It's gotta be Yesco, about the only place that has the facilitys to do it. I would think the price would be about 6.5 mill $100 per tile...layout,masking,paint,install, site prep. Vegas gets about $24.00 per hour for a journyman.
