I have to make some signs to go on a building at the local airport.. it will be 2 4x8's butted together. There is some existing plywood up there and I need to overlay it with something.. I was thinkin' .080 guage aluminum... what would you suggest? thanks [Thanks] here is a snap shot.. -

If the p/wood is in good shape, try 2mm Dibond.

Hiya Peewee,
Since you're pretty good with a brush, why don't you just make a pattern and paint it?
If not, just about any substrate would work, assuming those bolts holding the plywood to the frame are flush to the surface. If they aren't flush, I would suggest different fasteners so you do have a smooth surface to work with.
I would use .040" aluminum. I think .080" aluminum, Dibond or other thicker substrates may be overkill.

Havin' fun,

Checkers

I agree with Murray, 2 or even 3mm dibond is cheaper and much lighter than 080 aluminum.

Be aware that white dibond is not as glossy as baked white alum though.(never been an issue for me)

.040 or .063 aluminum if the bolts are flush.
Alumalite or dibond if they're not.

there are carriage boths holding up the plywood right now.they must stick up I'm guessing 1/16 - 1/8th inch.. The wood that is up there has vinyl hellvetica lettering (yuck!) stuck to it and painted over.. Thanks again you guyz!
