I have only ever heard negative things regarding pre-paid legal. Typically they are profitable because the lions share of their subscribers never use the service.
I listen to Dave Ramsey from time to time. He recomends hiring an attorney as needed. The truth is, most people have never hired an attorney for anything. Most generally, they play on unrealistic fears, much like insurance agents.
If you need an attorney, ask a friend for a refferal, and hire someone who specializes in your current need. Someone you can sit down with face to face. You can do alot with "gut feeling"

Ditto what the others said Laura. But, surprisingly, even my attorney said that they have their place. If you're doing simple stuff, like wills or basic real estate transactions, they may be ok. So, I'd rather be safe than sorry, and use someone that I have a relationship with, or do like Rick said and get a referral.

"Pre-Paid Legal" is a good front for a possible 'pyramid TYPE' scheme. NOTE: I said 'possible' pyramid 'TYPE' scheme.
Anyone can sell 'Pre-Paid Legal'. Pay a fee, sign up as a rep, sell it.
Just don't actually plan on USING it. I know. I signed up about ten years ago as a Rep and a Client. PPL uses local associate attorneys. SO, PPL does nothing. They find local attorneys to be associates and then sign up Reps. to sell the service. The red tape is in the negotiated pricing when you actually NEED an attorney...which of course means you REALLY NEED a lawyer...and that's when PPL is NOT the good plan to use.
I believe, from personal experience, that any legalities a Business encounters is best served on a case-by-case basis by a local corporate attorney...AND...there is NO simple personal Will or Living Will you can't download from numerous internet sites to handle a personal, no contest, situation. ANYthing more complex should be handled by an Attorney that you get to know, who gets to know you.
Fact is? If it's NOT a standard legal situation, it'll cost the same through PPL, or more, than if you found an individual attorney to handle it. That is MY experience and MY opinion.

Been there, done that. To NO benefit I ever experienced. (as both a REP for PPL and as a Client.) It's just like the ultimate disclaimer, "Your mileage may vary."
Personally? Every business entity needs an attorney. Find one in your locality. Meet and greet him/her. Get to know them. Use Him/Her for personal as well as business needs.
'Nuff said against PPL.

If you're "sue happy", a repeat criminal, or get sued alot & let's not forget... the chronic marrier, this service could be for you.
If you don't fall into the categories above, hiring an attorney when needed should be cheaper & you can pick him/her for yourself.

Have a truck driver friend with probably 50 tickets. He uses a PPL program that takes care of them for him. He's the only one I've ever heard speak positive about a pre-paid lawyer service. I also should mention that I think he pays fees directly to the lawyer firm and that's all they do is CDL cases. It's not the pyramid scheme.. oooops.. umm.. "multi-level marketing" thingy Karen was speaking of.
