The sponsor letters have gone out and we're hoping for a good response so we can keep the costs down and have a door prze of some sort for all attendees. A big THANKS to Carter Barnes over at Aluma Panel in Cumming, GA for becoming our first $1000 sponsor. Many of you met Carter at last year's Dixie Meet in Greenville SC or at Jimmy Chatham's meet a few years ago. He's a great guy - buy some stuff from him ......
We're also working on a pre-cut Dixie Letterheads panel design that you can sandblast in HDU, even donning the hood and giving the blaster a go if you like. (it's fun the FIRST time)
Although the theme and name is "Sign Circus", we don't want anybody thinking it will be anything other than what the Dixie Meets are known for: FUN, FOOD, and FELLOWSHIP. The theme is more to inspire your project idea, if you choose to work on something during the meet. We promise there won't be any clowns distracting you at the easels (other than the usual assortment you'd expect to see)
We'll have some surprises, but we're mostly going to keep the focus on what Letterheads is all about - sharing. If you haven't been to a meet yet, we hope this will be a good opportunity for you to experience the best of Letterheads in a laid-back environment. The venue is a large, well-stocked sign shop, so we'll be able to paint, carve, gild, blast, and BS into the wee hours - good news for people like me who don't get cranking 'til midnight.
Several people have called and offered to present seminars and demos, so as in years past, we will have a sign-up schedule board indicating when and where they'll be. We prefer to keep it loose and not list a formal schedule in advance. I will say, however, that the talent will be top-notch and well worth your efforts to attend.
Some people have asked about bringing their children. My take is that some kids will get a lot from this, and some won't. I'll leave it up to the parents to decide which is which, but we'd prefer that you bring the first group and leave the second at home. We'll have a kids' tent and a few activities, but the venue is in an industrial park, so plan accordingly. Stone Mountain, the new Georgia Aquarium, and Lake Lanier are within a 30 minute drive.
I've been assured by hosts of other meets that we won't have a clue how many are coming until they get here. With that in mind, here's some incentives to pre-register: $25 now or $40 at the door, no Guarantee of a shirt if you pay at the door, and the first 50 registrants will be entered into a special prize drawing. OK, no excuses - sign up now.
See you in October...............

Bill you're looking at mid 50's to mid 70's temp wise. I know there are places reasonably closeby to camp. Cis, come on down and bring your appetite for knowledge and your thirst for fun; it's all good. Patrick you *know* Auburn is gonna win. Donald I'll do my best to have your window pane panel done by the meet. Nancy, I hope you're not disappointed in our hospitality. I know this might seem crazy but I enjoy the company of my northern neighbors more than the ones closer by; at least they come see me once in awhile. Rapid it'll be good to get to meet you at last; sorry we couldn't have done it sooner. Kissy, I just heard that the airlines are dropping their rates so go ahead and book that flight. Sonny has asked me to do a trick shooting and pistol cleaning demo for the meet. You Canadians can just google the word "pistol" if you aren't familiar with that word. Is it October yet? Sheeler, check my second post and the info is there. I told the band I had a sweet southern songstress I'm gonna push up on the stage, so bring your concert clothes. After-party at the Waffle House.
Craig, maybe we can find you a lift - I tried calling the number you listed but it's been disconnected.
Welcome aboard John. I just heard from Sue Banasky, so the Northwest will be well-represented. Grab Donna and Dan on your way.
From the Northeast, we can expect to see our old pal, Rapid Ray, back in his former haunt, as well as the appropriately named Peach's, Bob and Marcia- cuz we need some people with funny accents. Cruising down in a big RV will be Karen and Bob Souza.
Also heading South will be our pal Mike Barnes who's bringing Jake Snow and hopefully, John Deaton (I told 'em to just throw a gunnysack over his head and drag him down here)
Nancy Beaudette and Noella Cotnam said they wanted to see a Georgia Autumn and old Savannah. Also from Canada, we have Tramp Warner and Russ Kelley - the paint will fly.
Locally, we're expecting our BB pals Judy, Ricky, Stefanie, Nancie, and Dusty - there's a party in itself.
We're going to try a new format seminar - a Photoshop Roundtable Session - with David Butler, Kelsey Dum, and other PS users sharing a few tricks. I'm sure we can all pick up something new. If you have any techniques or timesavers to share, burn a CD and we'll have a computer and projector set up - "Pass the mouse, please...."
I met with the City of Suwanee development directors yesterday and we're planning an 8' x 16' mural. (painted on Alumalite inside the venue) I'll have the basic design finished this weekend, but if anyone wants to take the ball and run with it, here's your chance. Some pictorial experience would be necessary, but you'll have plenty of top-notch help.
It just keeps gettin better.......

Posted by Ricky Jackson (Member # 5082) on :
Seriously, it depends on what you want to see. We have history from the revolutionary way, the "civil" war; we have beaches, mountains; we have Hotlanta "the city that ate Georgia". If you're into history and beautiful places, Savannah is world class. There are also a few places, like Madison, that General William Tecumseh Sherman left intact from his "urban renewal program". The town sports beautiful antebellum homes with fluted columns; old oak trees line the streets with their branches forming a canopy, Spanish moss dripping from the limbs. There is the Cyclorama, http://www.webguide.com/cyclorama.html, if you are really serious about civil war stuff. My bud Guff Sherman took his family to see that (he's a direct decendant of Gen. Sherman); they were sitting right behind this big redneck guy and his family. The redneck guys kid asks his dad "Who is that guy", gesturing at Gen. Sherman. His dad says "That's the son-of-a-beech that burnt Atlanner down". Guff quickly shushed his children and decided it was time to show them another part of the museum.
Most of us enjoy the image of redneck or rebel but don't be mistaken, Georgians are just as sophisticated and intelligent as anyone else. We do take pride in our southern heritage and we love to show off our beautiful state. Down here the difference between a yankee and a damn yankee is this: a yankee comes down, visits, then goes home. The other one decides to stay, LOL.
I've already made my pilgrimage to Dixie Outfitters and bought my summer wardrobe and several other items to take to the Dixie meet. In fact, I'm wearing This T-shirt today: http://www.rebeloutlet.com/proddetail.php?prod=DO-4912L

Here's their link: Parks at Chehaw Camping is available at the park too if you're into that. I live less than a mile from this park so you and Bill can come visit. May even put you up for the night. We put the Mayor and his wife up once. We also have a new FlintRiverQuarium in Albany. It features an Imax theater. Here's there link: Flint RiverQuaruim There are several Indian mounds in the area too. Contact me if I need any more information.

Jane, within a half an hour of Suwanee, there is Stone Mountain Park which is interesting even if it is a little touristy. http://www.stonemountainpark.com/
Madison has some pretty houses. That's where my new shop is, and it's about an hour and a half from the meet. Alot of the old houses are private and you can't really get access. Otherwise, it's just a little town on Georgia's antique trail, so a ton(actually I think around 10-15) of antique shops are really the draw to the town. I haven't seen any Spanish Moss in Madison. They did shoot something there for TV recently where they taped orange leaves on the trees to look like fall. Savannah has tons of Spanish Moss.
An hour or so north of the meet is the start of the Appalachian Mountains. You can get on the trail there and take it to New York if you want to. Really pretty and scenic, and in October, the leaves should be changing. Lots of waterfalls and usually a bunch of motorcyclists having fun on the winding mountain roads. http://www.waterfalls-guide.com/ga_waterfalls-guide.htm
It'll be great to meet you and everyone else. This will be the first meet for me.

I guess I was thinking of somewhere else with the spanish moss. Don't waste your time on the "little grand canyon"; it's just a badly eroded 10 acre piece of woods. Coca Cola has a museum in Hotlanner and there is always "underground Atlanta" too. If you want a peaceful, breath-takingly scenic drive I highly reccommend taking the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's much slower than taking the other routes (speed is 45 mph) but it is sooooooooooooo worth the drive! Thanks Dusty for the reminder.

I have a question for you Georgians. The last time we were in Georgia, I kept seeing this vine that was growing in the forests along the interstates. It looked like it was melting the forests similar to what a styrofoam cup looks like when it melts.
I had to ask a dozen people to find out what it was. Everybody I asked was either not from Georgia or not curious enough to wonder what it was.
Finally somebody told me it was a Kudzoo (sp) plant that had been imported into the state and was next to impossible to control as it was destroying a lot of the forests.
My question is -- have they found a way to control this plant yet?
Posted by Ricky Jackson (Member # 5082) on :
It is indeed Kudzu Bill, the bane of Georgia. It grows so fast... well, I've had employees that moved slower! It was brought here from Africa and, of course, is almost impossible to kill or control. It takes over powerlines, trees and anything else that gets in the way. It's in bloom right now and when you are driving by them (if you have a convertible) it smells like grape soda. It does have at least some medicinal value; they use an extract from it to treat alcoholism.
Posted by Judy Pate (Member # 237) on :
Hi Bill, Here's a little history on "Kudzu". Kudzu's History: Up and Down the Power Pole
Kudzu was introduced to the United States in 1876 at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Countries were invited to build exhibits to celebrate the 100th birthday of the U.S. The Japanese government constructed a beautiful garden filled with plants from their country. The large leaves and sweet-smelling blooms of kudzu captured the imagination of American gardeners who used the plant for ornamental purposes.
Florida nursery operators, Charles and Lillie Pleas, discovered that animals would eat the plant and promoted its use for forage in the 1920s. Their Glen Arden Nursery in Chipley sold kudzu plants through the mail. A historical marker there proudly proclaims "Kudzu Developed Here."
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Soil Conservation Service promoted kudzu for erosion control. Hundreds of young men were given work planting kudzu through the Civilian Conservation Corps. Farmers were paid as much as eight dollars an acre as incentive to plant fields of the vines in the 1940s.
Kudzu Control: An Impossible Dream?
The problem is that it just grows too well! The climate of the Southeastern U.S. is perfect for kudzu. The vines grow as much as a foot per day during summer months, climbing trees, power poles, and anything else they contact. Under ideal conditions kudzu vines can grow sixty feet each year.
While they help prevent erosion, the vines can also destroy valuable forests by preventing trees from getting sunlight. This problem led Dr. James H. Miller of the U.S. Forest Service in Auburn, Alabama to research methods for killing kudzu. In eighteen years of research, he has found that one herbicide actually makes kudzu grow better while many have little effect. Miller recommends repeated herbicide treatments for at least four years, but some kudzu plants may take as long as ten years to kill, even with the most effective herbicides.
We have a little Kudzu around Albany but the further you travel toward Columbus,GA the more you see. Evidently we haven't got kudzu under control. Judy

Thanks to the Letterville Travel Center for the links. One that hasn't been mentioned is the new Georgia Aquarium. Downtown, next to Centennial Olympic Park, it's the largest aquarium in the world and just had its 3 millionth visitor (it's only been open 8 months) http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/
I live about a mile from Stone Mountain and it's a nice 45 minute hike to the top. Also, a glass blowing demo every hour or so that's worth seeing.
For the Civil War history buffs, we can probably swing some free passes to the Atlanta History Center, which has an extensive museum. There's also the 10th anniversary Olympic display there and some large gardens. http://www.atlhist.org/
Regarding transportation, the venue is an hour's drive from the airport, so it's recommended that you rent a car. Public transportation will not get you to the meet and we don't have the wherewithal to offer a shuttle. When we get closer to the meet, we'll try to hook up people coming in at the same time.
Ryan, I should charge you double for having had the privilege........ but if you want to paint my guitar at the meet, we'll call it even.

Georgia Music Hall of Fame http://www.gamusichall.com/home.html and for another 2fer you could visit Duane Allman's grave at Rose Hill Cemetery also in Macon-not exactly a thrill-a-minute activity, but if you're a fan, you might enjoy it. Kudzu control??
Kudzu can be controlled????
Someone's TRYING to control it??????
If you're comin' thru Alabama on your way to the Letterhead meet, you might like to know, we have some of worlds largest 'open' range museums' for viewing kudzu. All of these locations are very easy to find . . . simply travel along any road in Alabama, particularly those marked 'county road'.
Along these scenic routes you will see fantastic natural kudzu formations which, like clouds in the sky, will be open to your imagination as to what they look like. Most of them look like giant, leafy vines taking over power poles and trees . . . but some actually kind'a look like dinosaurs . . .
Be advised to avoid wading thru, or trying to walk thru kudzu, which is a haven for snakes, and other critters, but more importantly, deceptive cover for deep ravines and drop-offs along the side of the road.
(This has been a travel message provided by the Natural Attractions Advisory Board of Alabama)
(Actually, this was only a joke. had it been an actual travel advisory, I would have shown a picture of the brochure . . . .)

Forget your cares and concerns about being a “Newbie” to either the biz or the Letterhead Crew. Dixie Meets are like no others. We share, we learn, we care...
Dixie SC ‘04 was my first meet (Thanks SC Guys!!). ‘Bama’s fine Lady, Sheila (aka ‘OneShot’) picked me up on her way and we went onto a whirlwind of wonders: from meeting Si (and his better half) to meeting the Peaches; from Rapid to Costa; people from all points of the compass, not to mention the most-unexpected musical entertainment! … and especially the late-night Waffle House jesters! (And YOU know who YOU are!!)
From the moment we show up at a Dixie Meet until we tear ourselves away with a zillion hugs, it’s hours well spent (like No others!) in learning, sharing and commiserating with other people – just like you (err, me!) who’ve been in this biz for a while. We’re all pros…just at different things and at different stages of our ‘sign lives’. We ALL have something to share, and lots more to learn--this I've learned and truly believe. We’ve all chosen this career for a personal reason…
A Letterhead Meet, and especially a laid-back Dixie Meet, allows you to check out new things, meet new people, see talents we’ll only dream of, and to learn invaluable tips and tricks to take home with us. It also gives us the opportunity to make new friends. That, alone, is worth any price.
I’m about 12 miles away from Sonny. I have a couch available for a gal-‘Head who’s in a pinch for funds. I KNOW how that feels! So, if someone needs a place to stay, on a shoestring, with two other Sign Gals…I’m offering what I can!! My work number is 678-714-1965 and email is a2zkwunch@hotmail.com.
And, Sonny? NO ‘clowns’? hmm. Oxymoronic, I think, Hun: “Letterhead Meet”? HeeHee. There MUST be clowns. Send in the Clowns!!! I’ll be there! ;o)
Cisco's coming? Too kewl. I can't wait to see ya'll on 'Common Ground', even tho' I AM one of THOSE 'Damn Yankees'...
Cya at Dixie!

Hi Karen, Yankees, girl I only went to the 7th grade, I don't know to much about the history of the Yankees, unless you're talking about the baseball team. I remember when I was in Bama I saw lot of confederate flags, but I saw them here in Calif. all I know is I want to see some paint slingin, music slamming, food to continue on, and a few drinks of cool beverages, people painting on panels or walls, that's me I'm a Walldog, but heyyyyy, I also like to roam and wonder around parts I never been to and see how folks party on your side of the country. And where is all this happening...at the Dixie Meet. I'm almost there!!

More registrations are coming in daily - remember the $25 pre-registration fee ends October 1st. After that, it's $40 and you're not guaranteed a t-shirt. So Git-R-Done..........

lol Bill . . . is that 'pretty young neice'? Or did you mean it was really 'petty' of her to schedule a wedding that would dare interfere with a meet??
LOL

Sonny, we just mailed the registration and we will fix the flights soon. We didn´t see a picture in Signs of the Times from Mike and us as "locals". Do you have a copy or can you mail me this picture? The joke is not to order one beer, it´s how to order five beers..... but we will show you when we´re in Suwanee!
Is there something we can do or bring?
Can´t wait to see you all again!!!
All the best from Bavaria/Germany

Hello M&M, I will look for that picture from Scotland. The only things you need to bring are yourselves and pictures of your sign work and your beautiful valley in Bavaria.
Bill, you're right - your niece is petty and she should change her wedding plans.

I guess I sat here long enough trying to think of a reason to go to this meet. Well, back a couple of years ago Brian & Bob (me) hosted our first meet in Moncton, N.B.& guess who travled all the way from down south to help make our meet a success. The big boys from Georgia. I guess it only fair to return the support by attending this gala event. Save me some sand and a hunk of Kelli's PB. Cheque will go out tomorrow. Will arrive Wed.to lend a hand.
Posted by Sonny Franks (Member # 588) on :
OK, now we got us a PARTY. When we first arrived in Moncton at the ranch, Bob met us at the front and gave us a tour of the facilities, ending at the giant walk-in cooler, packed floor to ceiling with cold beer. It's impossible to compete with Sunset Valley Ranch and the hospitality of our Canadian pals, but we'll do the best we can.
Bob, I'll have some Molsons iced down in your honor. It just keeps gettin' better.......

Finished my banner last night while listening to some Civil War era music on the CD player. You know when you get to the point where you want to add one more thing, but then you went too far? It was just at that moment when "Dixie" started playing. I knew it was finished then. Really wish I could make it but the banner will have to suffice in my stead. love....Jill

My flight plans are still half-baked on 3 different expiring Orbitz windows behind this Letterville window, but I plan to make the purchase later today, when the spin-off trip dates to visit some family after the meet are firmed up. I still plan to be available all day on the 12th to help with building the stage & with whatever other projects you might have.
I'm looking forward to meeting all you dozens of folks that already registered... as well as the rest of whoever shows up!

alright Ray I went through the 3 pages trying to find reference to your attendance.. I was pretty sure you had committed as well, but must have skimmed too fast.
I considering bringing a djimbe to jam with the acoustic guitars late at night. Do you ever settle for the weak substitute of hand drums for those "unplugged' jam opportunities? If so, do you own any & are you bringing any?

Posted by Ray Rheaume (Member # 3794) on :
Hell yeah!
Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :
right-on!! we'll play some dead, some allmans & some other double drummer stuuff!
...seriously though, Sonny's friends 10 Degrees Off are a working band... so the thought that they will allegedly allow us unproven signs guys up on stage is a brave & generous rumor & one I take with a grain of salt & tempered with a good measure of low expectations.
...but, are any letterheads bringing electric guitars & at least 1 guy with a bass??
...Because then the thought of Nancy bringing some house-band drums would really open up the opportunity to keep this 24/7 party from closing down (...or ensure that it's shut down by the authorities if experience is any teacher )
BTW, my flights are bought & paid for. I arrive in Atlanta on the 11th around 5:30 pm & I'm renting a jeep, so I'll have room to take a few other heads into Lilburn.
I want to help build the stage on Thursday, but I may be coerced into an airport shuttle run as well.

Hi Matthew! We're staying at the Comfort Inn. You can get a discount rate of $65 plus tax per night. You need to tell them you are with the Letterheads of course. Lots of letterheads are staying there too. Check out the post by Sonny titled: Topic: Hotels, Registration, Transportation @ Dixie Meet Judy
Posted by Sonny Franks (Member # 588) on :
Sounds like we might have a reprise of the Atlanta Pop Festival. I just did a logo for Clinton Moon, a red hot 19 year old guitar player who might come by Friday to jam with us. Check him out at ctmband.com
John: yes, you're way overdue. Be sure and bring your guitar (and maybe an amp). I got a feeling the Dixie Letterheads are gonna be rockin, Bubba.....
The Comfort Inn ($65) and the Comfort Suites ($79) will be the designated host hotels - they're right next door to each other and share a parking lot. Make sure you tell them you're with the Letterheads.

Blake, got your check today. Roger, we'll have plenty of air and I've been cutting and painting panels all day for the airbrushers and pinstripers. We don't want anybody just standing around with nothing to do. (Unless you want to)
Someone asked me to post all the registrations I've received so far - remember, it don't count 'til I see your money - I'll try to do that soon, but I type slowwwwww.
Don't forget: the $25 registration fee runs out this week. After Oct. 1, it's $40. Don't say I didn't tell you.......

Sonny, or anyone else who will be playing music at the Dixie Meet, let me know if you have any CD's of your songs?
Today I was looking for Boiled Linseed Oil, I just found out it is banned in CA so I asked is a state thing or nation wide. They said I might be able to find it out of state. I said...well I'm going to Atlanta next month, maybe they might have it there. One guy said he had been to Savanna, and Atlanta, said it was beautiful and you could find anything you want there! I guess I'm going to have to find that out, does your state ban Linseed Oil? Or was "Anything" not persay linseed oil?

Tony,
I called Sonny yesterday to make sure I wasn't out of line suggesting more electric jamming then the Saturday night live band already booked. He was fine with that idea, so I'm still rooting for it to happen.
I just called Nancie today to offer my help with transporting, or purchising heads, or slappin' em on & tuning... the drums she mentioned.
They were loaned to her kids & are currently in not completely working condition in storage, so if you are offering the availability of something a little more ready-to-rock... I will also offer you my help as a roadie if you have any need for more room in a vehicle. I arrive the 11th & decided to get a truck instead of a car, so that I can help shuttle people, drums or whatever.
I'm still planning to bring one of my Djimbe drums as well for the acoustic late-night sets.

So, Sonny, what's the body count up to now? This is looking like it's gonna be some MEET!
Posted by Sonny Franks (Member # 588) on :
Jane, I'll get around to posting who's coming soon. For now, let me say this: I'm overwhelmed at the response, not only from registrants, but the sponsors and suppliers as well. To date, every single person I've talked to has, at the very least, offered a door prize. I've come to think of the UPS guy as Santa Claus - every day brings more goodies. People I've never met or done business with are stepping up to the plate and, quite frankly, covering my ass. I opened a package today from W&B Gold Leaf Co. - over 800 bucks worth of gold- even though I've only spoken to Urban by phone, he feels like a friend (a very generous one)
Another example: I talked for half an hour with Garrett from Laminators, Inc. - great guy, and he's sending all the Alumalite for the mural. Here's more: Kellie Miller from Precision Board is sending lots of HDU (unfortunately, she won't be able to bring it personally) and John Meeks, last year's co-host of the Dixie meet and owner of Everwood is also coming with lots of samples and he's picking up the tab for Friday's lunch. I can go on and on, but the point is, we have some wonderful support from our suppliers. (and some killer door prizes)
Another thing I want to mention: there are lots of people in this business whose talent is worthy of our respect and admiration. Then there are a very few who inspire us not only with their abilities, but also their willingness to share that special knowledge. I'm honored that so many of those people have chosen to attend our meet.........
Posted by Linda Silver Eagle (Member # 274) on :
Sonny, you are truly blessed! We love you man! I'm excited!
Great looking mural!
WooHoo! Lindian
Posted by Ricky Jackson (Member # 5082) on :
Doug it will be nice to meet you but you won't find any chicks at the airport waiting to lei you, LOL.
I'll bring my altonized electric guitar and two little Fender amps. I sold my full stack Marshall for this setup; I run my signal into a digital signal processor and split it into stereo output to the two amps. It's SWEET!
I haven't picked up my guitar in almost 2 years so I will be very rusty! But I'm willing to give it a shot and jam with you guys. This is gonna be a great meet. Yeeeeeeee hawwwwww!!
Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :

Found out a couple of days ago that I won't be able to make it.
Damn...Damn...Damn!!!
I have other commitments (not work related) to see to.
I did, however, encourage the tech guy from Estimate to try to get down there. His name is Johnathon and, if he makes it, I'm sure that he will feel right at home even though he's not really a 'sign guy'.

Jane, (and anyone else wanting to check out some of the GA sights while you are visiting...)
I say "go North, Letterheads!" The mountains of GA are very beautiful this time of year, and are full of festivals! The two that immediately come to mind are "Gold Rush!" and "Octoberfest".
"Gold Rush" takes place in the small gold (and copper) mining town of Dahlonega, about an hour and a half from Suwanee. America's first Gold Rush was here, not San Francisco. There's gold in them thar hills!...
These days, the community is known for it's: Picturesque rolling mountains & valleys, Horseback riding, Mining (there are several places to pan for gold), Native American History, Wineries, Motorcycle riding, Camping & Tubing, and of course, its Historic Town Square. The Square is foot-friendly traffic and is host many artists, antique shops, Old-Timey Photography and eateries including a coffee house, fudge shop and ice cream parlour. The Courthouse in the center of the Square is now open as a Museum. The Historic Smith House (Bed & Breakfast, gift shop and restaurant) has recently been under renovations...while remodeling, they found an entrance to a Gold Mine that dates back over 100 yrs! They found it under the dining room floorboards in the restaurant. It was covered up due to some "politics".
Warning: "Gold Rush!" draws thousands by the busload for this annual festival which will include (authentic Appalachian)music, food, arts & crafts, etc...but if you like that sort of thing, you will not be dissapointed!
Now if that is not your cup of tea...simply continue up GA 400 and hang a right onto SR 115 and go through Cleveland (home of Cabbage Patch Dolls and Hospital)over to Helen, for celebration of Octoberfest!
Manfred and Marcus, who are the native Bavarians, will appreciate the efforts this community has put forth to recreate an authentic Alpine Village! You will truly be amazed at the cobblestone streets, architechture /gingerbread detailing, wall murals, etc. that have been created by local artisans since the "development" of this city.
As the story goes... a LOCAL SIGNPAINTER (gotta love it!) who had done a military tour in Germany, was commissioned to "recreate" the look to boost tourism (and the economy) of Helen. This project has been wildly successful since the late 60's, and most tastefully done. While it is "tourist", it is not over commercialized, but rather built by small(and mostly private) businesses like ours. It is also a foot-traffic frindly place. (park your car and walk to everything)
Some things to see there include (of course) gift shops, clock shops, European imports, excellent German eateries (from finer, sit-down restaurants to take-out walk-up windows), a working Glockenspiel, year-round ferris wheel, putt-putt, quilt shops, (and my most very-very favorite:)a re-creation of the Matterhorn and model train villiage (two stories high!), a cool toy shop, Christmas shop, oh-and hey..don't forget Aunt Flossie's Funnel Cakes!
There is camping and cabins, tubing on the river, Oompah Bands playing, Hot Air Balloons, and plenty of Imported Brews to sip. A real German style party! Liederhosen optional, for those who enjoyed wearing kilts in Scotland...
Come to the Letterhead meet in GA...and stay a while to see the sights afterward....Enjoy!
Posted by Sonny Franks (Member # 588) on :
Thanks Stefanie - you should have been a travel agent. One of the reasons we picked the October date is the mountains should be peaking for Fall colors then. If you're coming down from the northside, it would be worth getting off the interstate and cruising thru the north GA mountains. (or the Great Smokies in North Carolina and Tennessee)
BTW, today is the LAST DAY for $25 registration. October 1st, it's $40 a head.....

Hey Sonny
Have you got room for 2 latecomers from Scotland.. Didnt know if we would be able to make it until now.....The Wives managed to give Myself and Damian McLaughlin a weeks pass...Only took some gentle loving words and a headlock for mine to agree. So managed to get a couple of flights today... arriving on Wed 11th and back on Wed 18th.. Tried to persuade Stewart to come with us but unfortunately he just couldnt make this trip as much as he wanted to come... Apologies for not booking sooner but as I said it was touch and go over the last couple of weeks whether we could make it... Looking forward to seeing you all soon..

Scott and Damian: There's always room at the Sign Circus for a few more clowns. And that, my friends, should cover the Scottish Pub Song portion of the show.
Keeps gettin' better.

Several folks have asked me to give a demo at the Dixie Meet on posting pictures. Sonny is making the computer and connection available. Now, I am no expert, but I have had good success with my method so I'll give it a try. It is much easier to explain the process in person than over the phone or in just written words. I will be making available the written step by step in hardcopy for the meet demo and in PDF format on my website for anyone else interested. Right now I'm finishing off the step by step and need to post an image...so this is it... Edited to say the step by step is done, and I will also show how to edit posts...

Yo Duncan...I don't see Susie B. in your Lodi gallery. She deserves a place of honor as hard as she works at these meets....
Posted by Duncan Wilkie (Member # 132) on :
You're right Jeff. I assume you mean Susie Butler. David is a Letterville resident/merchant, but maybe Susie didn't submit a picture or hasn't posted here. I'm going to look back at the posts to see if I can track her pic down. Indeed, she is one hardworking gal and one of the nicest Letterheads I've met. Can't wait for Laurie to meet her in Dixie.
Posted by Duncan Wilkie (Member # 132) on :
For the Lodi Meet I made a similar poster. I hate coming back from a meet and saying Dang, I wanted to meet that Letterville person. So I made the poster to make sure I would track down every last one. To the best of my knowledge this poster is up to date. Please let me know if I missed anyone or goofed on the spelling. I'll make additions as they come in. I played around with the name a bit. I liked Sign Circus Resident Freeks but Laurie thought that was a little rude. Then there was Sign Circus Resident Acts... So Stars it is... If you know of anymore Letterville Residents registered or confirmed, let me know. Please remember I am getting the pics off the Bullboard, so pics of Non-Residents are not available .

Some questions regarding the non-sign part of the meet.
What's everyone play or like music-wise?
Anybody want to hear or play anything in particular?
Who's bringing the B3 and the Rhodes?
Since I'm practicing, I might as well practice(or learn) something we'll actually play. I'd like for folks to enjoy it and for it to sound as good as it can for a bunch of non-semi-former-professionals who have never practiced together.

OMGoodness, Sign Dog.
Could you add me? I'd be honored... If'n I wouldn't break the lense... Hellfire. And is Linda Silver Eagle in there??? She's gotta be.
Sonny has actually been able, for one day, to do what I have not in four years ... HE'S going to close our shop for S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT!
OMG. And peeps from our shop WANT to visit. Yes. In fact, the Sky IS Falling.

3 more days till my travels start & I am really getting stoked to be heading into my first Letterhead meet. My love for this craft has taken my life on a 16 year journey that has made every other hobby pale by comparison. I am so ready to kick my sign career into high gear from this meet!
but, I can't deny, I really love playing music too!
quote:Originally posted by Dusty Campbell: What's everyone play or like music-wise?
I emailed Dusty already, but I'll paste the "music-wise" part here for others:
quote: I have done some jamming in my time... far more then actual bands with practice & set lists... so I really like the freeform spontenaity & the little bit of pressure to be on, to anticipate, & be forced to respond in a live situation... & not lose it.
I'll play just about anything. I lived around Chicago when I graduated in 1977. I had been seeing all the great jazz fusion cats for the previous 2 years... the 4 years before that, starting in middle school, I was completely immersed in "classic rock"... (back when it was new) all day, every day... so I can jam to most classic rock, & I can still enjoy most of it... but I never listen to it by choice anymore. I can also get into some fast, funky syncopated fusion instrumentals... that's still fun! ...I also had several years of listening to Reggae & Grateful Dead & jamming with other hippy-type dead heads doing classic rock medleys... laying down non-stop hour-long sets of one-song blending into another. That was a real party-pleaser... back then anyway
I even went back to my roots & had a second hard-core death metal & speed metal lifestyle for awhile after my divorce, which continued into my grunge influenced 90's
But, after that I calmed down my lifestyle & started playing more Stevie Ray Vaughan style blues, traditional blues, & returning to a little bit of jazz/funk stuff..
how about you guitarists?

Hi Letterheads!
This is Johnathon Bakan the Technical Director at EstiMate Software. It has been a long time since I have posted so I am writing to introduce myself and to indicate that I will be headed out to the Dixie meet this year and am very excited about it!
It has been a long time since EstiMate has been out to a meet so it is about time! Special thanks goes out to Neveman for his encouragement and also to all the 'heads for their support over the years.
That said, are there specific topics Letterheads would like to know about EstiMate? I would assume you want some kind of demo and if so what types of things would you want to see priced or what functions do you want to see demonstrated?
Sonny, I know its not official until the check arrives so I'll tell 'em to get the registration out pronto.
One of the things I've always marveled at being a lurker on this board throughout the years is the musical enthusiasm of all the 'heads. In addition to a high-end creative visual bent you all have got the musical thing going too. Wow! I think it is way cool without a doubt. I make and play handmade flutes and plan to bring some down so if any of you guitarists wanna do some flute and guitar jams, I'd be into it.
Respectfully,
Johnathon Bakan Technical Director EstiMate Software Corp.

If I had a picture of Kudzu, it'd be cool to come up with a shirt for the meet. "Kudzu Bill ... who's your daddy", sort of a theme. I've yet to use the Versa Camm for a shirt print. I wonder if that would be a hit in Georgia, or if I would wind up in jail, or mysteriously disappear in the forest.
On second thought, I think I'll scrap that idea, because I'm wantin' to load up the trunk with peanuts and peaches for the trip home. That way I can create my own gas crisis and be sweet about it at the same time.

Nancie - is it time to cut onions ?
EVERYBODY ELSE: If you're planning on coming and haven't sent in your registration, please just pick up the phone and let me know. I will be awake, no matter what time zone you're in or when you call. Former hosts will attest to that. 770-923-9933
Also, I will post a separate thread for those flying in. Add your arrival time, and if you have room for somebody or if you need to share a ride, we'll try to hook you up, if possible, but don't look for me at Baggage Claim.

I'm here. I'm trying. There's MANY other Women that do the same thing, day after day. I respect them and, at this upcoming meet? I hope to learn from them, and share more concepts.
If we can arrange a 'female jama' party, Sat. night in Sheila's room at 8PM, that'd be great...a reunion/relationship of sign gals. It'd be kewl.
OK. I'm just wishing things. I'd LOVE to talk to JUST FEMALES, one time, about 'females in the biz'...to see if what I've found and learned is what other females have experienced...

And Doug!!!! I am SO glad I get to meet you! It will be a pleasure! And you are bringing coffee too? YUM!!!!
Don't know about dancing, Sonny, I am a bit shy!

KONA - for coffee lovers like me, that's the holy grail. SignDog will sniff out a grinder, no problem, Doug.
Cisco will be autographing his Lodi video LIVE and IN PERSON, ladies and gentlemen. Bring your Sharpies. And the Oscar goes to......... Francisco Vargas.
Bobbie, thanks for reminding me: I need to re-gray my beard.

Besides, I don't want to miss my husband's stand up routine or John Byrd on guitar or dancing with John Lennig on Saturday night!

LOL, NO WAY Mark; drunk friends are WAY too much fun to stop!
Jilly, bring the chipped ham on down; we can use it for catfish bait.
Karen, for the record, NO, you can't have the girls at 8 on Saturday night; that's at least 4 hours too early. We don't want Ryan and Donald slow dancing together, LOL.
Doug, I'm so pumped about the meet it feels like I'm already on my fourth cup 'o java.
Got the strings changed on my guitars. I'm bringing my "Altonized" Jackson/Charvel model 6 and my 67 Gibson Trini Lopez (bought new & highly collectable!). Worked yesterday on my project for Donald; it'll be finished tonight.

I volunteer a grinder... or a Vitamix if we need to grind a lot at once. (Or maybe make Margaritas?) Whatever we need in the way of kitchen gadgets, I prob'ly have... I've I didn't paint for a living, I'd prob'ly cook for a living. I'd love to be a part of a round the table discussion- either female or in mixed company. Maybe everyone bring their jammys to the meet on Saturday nite & we can ALL pretend we're havin' a slumber party! (Just kidding! Don't know that I wanna see what some of you might wear to bed!LOL!)

Got a Local Live map done up here showing the layout of the hotels and the route to the Circus.
Zoom in close then click on the Bird's Eye and Aerial views to check out the lay of the land... noticed a Cracker Barrel and Waffle House in close proximity...
You can also click on the location, then More Info for the links to the hotels.

My usual travel guy Dan can't make it to this one so I will be driving the 1000 mile to Ga alone. Oh well I have a bunch of great toons and a mattress in the back of the Toyota Previa and a case of coca cola so I have everything I need for a great trip. Someone find me a parking spot beside the shop where I can park(live) and I will keep you beer cold. Sandy
Posted by Bill Diaz (Member # 2549) on :
We're heading out the door. This is more than a letterhead trip for us, it's also a vacation. Going to stay at letterheads Steve and Gloria Estes' bed and breakfast tonight and amble south from there. If the economy down south needs extra cash, we plan to do what we can to help out.
I'm looking forward to great peanuts, great peaches, Waffle Houses, southern drawls and southern hospitality. The weather around here is going to be cold and maybe nasty, so I hope to navigate away from it. Most importantly I'm looking forward to seeing old friends we've made and I'm looking forward to meeting new ones.
I originally thought this was going to be a small meet, but I guess it's going to be a larger one -- for whatever reason. That Sonny must be one popular dude. Each one of these meets takes on a life of its own, and it is especially nice to go far away to one, so that customers can't track you down with their petty demands. I'm so burned out right now, I could explode.
Jane, get your butt in the car and let's let the fun begin. WWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Ricky Jackson (Member # 5082) on :
LOL, you guys crack me up. Bill, the peanuts are just coming in now; you have GOT to try "Georgia caviar", boiled peanuts. You can wash it down with a Coke or Georgia champagne (sweet iced tea). The peaches are long gone now but there is plenty of southern hospitality to go round. One thing that most people don't know about Kudzu is when it blooms it smells just like grape soda. Yes Bobbie you will see some; just don't park close to it or it will cover your car while you watch, LOL. You think I'm kidding!
Posted by Nancie W. Phillips (Member # 3484) on :
Ricky & I just spoke on the phone. He's gonna bring some peanuts for boiling...I'll do the rest. Y'all enjoy!

This thing has gotten out of control since I last posted. Something is screwed up with my Letterville at work, so I haven't been able to see all of these developments. Ryan definitely looks better in a wig. There is a photo from Mazeppa somewhere proving that. I prefer pinstripes to fake hair on my head. I don't sleep with Ryan on these trips, just ask Joe Buck why not. He tried it once, and he hasn't been the same since.
I can't wait. I will be heading down there tomorrow after lunch. See Ya'll soon

I've REALLY been counting on attending this meet ever since it was announced and am sorry that I'm not going to be able to make it. It's only about a 20 hour drive from the shop but currently my daughter Rocky & I are the only two employees left here keeping 3 locations going in addition to trying to clean up the mess we inherited. The Mazeppa meet in 2005 was the last meet I've been able to make and that was also the last time I've been able to take a day off. So, tell everyone I said "howdy" and I'll be looking forward to seeing the pix.
p.s. Jimmy, I'm sorry that you're not going to make it either. Keep your chin up & I hope to see you at the next one!

We're with the Aussie Letterheads painting up a small town called Burrawang. Mazeppa is a City compared to this town. There's a Butcher in town that sells newspapers. That's what they call their Variety Store. Wonderful people!
I've been telling everyone about all of you gathered at Sonnys. Everyone is amazed that there is another Letterhead Meet going on at the Top Of The World. Wish we could be 2 places at once!
Hoping you have lots of new people at your meet. Take time to get to know them and make them feel comfy. I sure had feelings of insecurity at my first meet. Still do!
Get lots of photos. We're way behind on our Meet coverage so bear with us. Hundreds of NZ and Aussie pics to sort and process.
Long Live Letterheads. Party on!

Rick and others.... am writing from thje meet on Doug's laptop. I want to tell you how awesome this meet has been. There are panels on top of panels...mucho striping and I'd say at least 40 sandblasted panels have been done. Bob from Wizard signs where the meet is has had a man blasting steadily for 2 days now. Everyone is painting up a storm and there is lots of good food and music. We just ate some great smoked barbeque, and a blues band is setting up as I I speak. Just really alot of fun...wish you all were here.

We are having a BLAST! This is one of our first visits South and we survived and have not gotten eaten by Kudzu! Its been great, greeting old friends and meeting new. It's funny how some of the people I have met for the first time, I already feel like I knew, because of here! But now I know what the SOUND like. (You know, these people down here talk funny!) Last night the Letterheads were jamming in grand style with about 8 people on stage at one point. Cisco is standing right behind me and says, "Orale, ya'll!"

I went to sleep last night with visions of pinstripes in my head. I sketched off a couple. I can't tell you how much inspiration I soaked up.
Thanks Sonny and Bob! And everyone else who made this happen by way of food, supplies, help in the shop, spousal support and all the behind the scenes stuff that's not apparent.
