I guess it has something to do with how small your pen is? eerrr I mean your brush... I mean painting!
I usually just support my hand with my other hand, but sometimes I will use a malstick, I have a 3 piece screw together one I keep in my kit and I usually only use 2 pieces, I suppose most of my work is small. Is it true what thay say about those walldogs, having huge malsticks???

I have one I made out of 3/4" PVC with a tennis ball attached to it. At the time, I need one for several 4 X 8 banners I was working on. Never seen a real one, so I made it myself. Took it to the Mars Meet and Don Eckland saw it and had a field day with it!! It was soo cool! I was embaressed at first, but he had such a good time "showing it off"!! That mellowed me out.
To make along story short, I made Don sign it. I've then cleared over his signiture, and it is one of my favorite, coolest tools yet. Got a "real one" these days, but anytime I see it, I think of Don!! Watching him make fun of me is a moment I'll never forget!
Don, where ever the $%^&$ you're at, you made a lasting impression on me of the Letterhead Movement that I'll never forget! You are soo cool!
Hope ypur doing well Buddy!
Nobody, NOBODY, has a bigger maul stick than me!

My mahl stick is so small, I only use it to sign checks...and it's so old and worn, it tends to bend in the middle now when I attempt to use it.

Bet you never heard of this one! Beats a malstick on every job.
You can pull straight paint lines with it, set it in wet painted area without disturbing the paint, can be used on any type of surface. light weight,it can have a rubber heel or point contact.

The average size of my work is 8'x16'; lettering ranging from 2" to 24"...have never used a mahlstick. I found that if I move fast enough, there is no opportunity for squiggly lines...(not that squiggly lines are bad, Dan)

I don't got no mallstick and I don't go to the mall but I had a Mahlstick, once. When I went to work for a billboard company during my apprentice days I was told to put it away and never let it be seen again. I guess that was because it wasn't need to do big a$$ letters and pictorials. Several years later I did use a broomstick with a cutter tied and taped to the end of it. I was trying to finish up a job in downtown Peoria,Illinois where I was re-painting a theatre marquee. I had my 55' snorkel out to the limit and a 10' step ladder tied off to the bucket and using the broom (mahlstick)I almost finished it off but had to go back and work off of a 75' pick (skyhook). Got r' done. Only time I really used one on purpose was on a window gold leaf or small copy office door. Used one to stir the coals in my bar-b que.

Like Bob, my mahlstick is purple, sometimes. Other times it is red, yellow and green. Its really too big and I should have a smaller one, but I would miss the big one. I keep mine in a special place and only use it for special occasions. One day I was using it and someone saw it and said, "Oh my goodness, thats the biggest one Ive ever seen!" Im proud of my mahlstick, you should be too.

inuendo? I don't see anyone using any inuendo in this post at all...except Ricky obviously.
well anyway... like I said my mahlstick is adjustable and has an attachable pallette. I keep it tucked away until I need to use it. I left it out once and Kimmy grabbed it and started smacking it around, I told her it was not a toy, and it was a that it needs to be used properly by a trained professional, and that smacking it around my cause damage. I knew a guy who use to pauint signs a few towns over and he left his laying around anywhere, I was at his shop one time and accidental knocked it over and it fell hit his cat that was sleeping nearby.
Oh yeah btw... mine is silver, of course.

Bring it on Kelsey; I will be there for sure. I love good music almost as much as I love playing it. One of these days I'm going to have to post a pic of my "Marshall" taboret. I had a full stack but sold it and bought two smaller Fenders, running it thru a digital signal processor and splitting it into stereo. It doesn't have the crunchy Marshall sound but I think the DSP sounds even better and the two little amps kick arse.

Posted by Monte Jumper (Member # 1106) on :
Geeze ...I wish I had gotten in on the fun earlier.
I actually have a 49" long (wooden) mahl stick with a cork ball on the end.
The reason for this size? When I was a young'n we did a lot of "chart" work that required running fine lines in both horizontal and verticle forrmat.
Horizontal lines were done by running a yardstick straight with the lip if the table and verticles with the mahl stick.
The length enabled you to do all the verticle strokes by holding your brush hand and running the lines the full length of it when you were working on a 48" lettering bench.
I take it with me to most all meets I go to... so many of the people here have seen it, asked about it and even teased me about "poking someone in the eye" with it.
I'd even venture to say I have the "biggest mahl stick" here. I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours?
Posted by Dusty Campbell (Member # 4601) on :
I was reading an old post on mahl sticks(a serious one), and couldn't help reading this silliness into it.
Some people wrap the end in leather, some people rub talc on theirs so their hand runs down it easier.

And I applaud those willing joke about it. After all, we're all human.

Camille, the mahlstick has to be hard. If it's soft, it keeps flopping over & is just too much hassle to work with. And not everyone can use the same mahlstick, even if it's a good hard one, it's just a personal preference thing.
Walk softly & carry a big stick!!!
Steve, I too like seeing you take a more hands-on approach to moderating. Just don't be man-handling the mahlstick.

Jon - good one! Hehehehe...but only in Yoda's dreams.
I keep hearing all the women talking about the need for a hard mahl stick.
Well, I did some research and discovered a mahl stick with the brand name "Wobbly Warhead."
It's hard on both ends and soft in the middle....and apparently wasn't popular as it didn't last long.
Any of you gals ever use one of those?
Being a mostly vinyl guy...I wrapped mine in Avery Reflective vinyl. But it got moldy when it got wet one day....Avery wouldn't warranty it.
Never use the wet method when applying Avery reflective vinyl to your mahl stick.
