We are proudly hosting a little Letterhead picnic here at Giggle Ranch on Saturday, July 29. We'll start in the shop with lots of laughs, perhaps paint some panels, route some cool stuff, and other stuff that Letterheads do. You can count on a few surprises too as this is the place where imagination lives in 3D!
In the late afternoon we'll head up to the lake for the first ever Letterhead World Cup Adventure Golf Challenge at Giggle Ridge. I'm sure the competition will be fierce!
Then it will be back to the ranch for a barbeque, more sign/shop type stuff and perhaps some guitar pickin along with lots of good visiting.
Our guests of honor will be the Shortreed family who are visiting all the way from Ontario - practically from the other side of the country.
Its going to be a laid back affair, not formal at all. Letterheads close and far are more than welcome.

After a nights sleep... or rather a night of tossing and turning and thinking of things we are going to do for this little event we have come up with a few more ideas.
This is only a one day event but it won't be short on fun!
Things will start mid-morning... coffee break is the first thing on the adjenda at 10:00 am sharp. Paint and visit until noon... then break for lunch here at the ranch.
After lunch we'll do more painting, carving and visiting until about 4:00... then up to Giggle Ridge for a round of golf... Prizes to be awarded!
Then back to the ranch for a hamburger bar-b-que and more letterhead stuff!
This will be a family event!

I'm currently working on a routed panel for the meet... and its fresh off the MultiCam this morning. I'm doing it now as I will probably be a little busy to get any painting done on the day of.

There's an extra special element to this day. Our Daughter Heather will be attending her first meet. She has no idea what her Old Man does for a living. I better get out the brushes and start practising.

For those who want to come from far away I'll work on getting information regarding places to stay relatively close. It is real pretty country in these parts with some great things to see and do.
If you are flying here you will probably go to Vancouver, about 1 1/2 hours away. Give me a shout if you aren't renting a car.
Here's the web page for our local tourism board... http://www.tourismchilliwack.com/ You can follow the links to the hotels and other accomodation. I recommend the Comfort Inn . The manager, Len Wiens, is a good friend and I'll see what he can do for rates.
If you need place to stay don't delay making your reservation as it is prime tourist season that weekend. Its a provincial holiday weekend.

From Mexico, it's about two grand. As far as Canada is concerned, the biggest problem has been getting Letterheads into the country, not out of it. Just make sure you don't have any brushes with pistol grips, especially if they have notches on them.

HI Dan,

Being from Ontario, I thought you probably have some experience making signs for the snowy mountain scene, yes? I'm considering using one-shot on MDO - do you see any problems with this? How about vinyl? High performance?
All input welcome, Victoria
Posted by Dan Sawatzky (Member # 88) on :
Actually I'm in beautiful British Columbia Victoria... within 70 miles of the coast, due north from you and a long ways west from Ontario.
We have plenty of snowy mountains in these parts, especially in winter but our shop doesn't do hardly any work with MDO, OneShot or vinyl.
We like to work with sculpted concrete, steel or Precision Board and work mostly with acrylic paints.

We went shopping today for all the non-perishables and things which can stay in the freezer until the picnic. We filled two large shopping carts with goodies.
We had another meal planning meeting today... and I have nothing to worry about... in fact I have been BANNED from that area.... except to eat GREAT FOOD with the rest of our guests. I have the most wonderful family who are taking care of EVERYTHING!!
Sue Banasky is providing the panels for us in the panel jam area and will bring them by next week. We are going to continue the exchange panel theme and have folks do up their favorite letter on the panels... they are the perfect size... 12" X 12". I'm hoping to see some great work produced in our shop on the day of the picnic! I'll have the MultiCam going too to do up some 3D samples of similar size.
John Lennig has promised some hand painted banners and knowing his awesome hand lettering skills I KNOW they will be fantastic.
Other details continue to be working out... Its starting to feel REAL!!!! And its LESS than 3 weeks away!!!

We're excited Dan! In the beginning this was planned as a small gathering where we could meet as many local Letterheads as possible in one place. This is beyond our wildest dreams! What a guy!
We'll be arriving on July 25. Our Daughter Heather and her Boyfriend Doug are picking us up at the Vancouver Airport. A couple days before the meet, I have the very special honour of presenting Heather with a cake celebrating 2 years of living drug free. There's no way to put into words how much that means to so many. We're all so proud of her. What a gal!
Letterhead Meets are always a wonderful experience, but this one is very special for me. For the first time I will be able to show Heather what this Letterhead thing of ours is all about. I'm gonna be one very proud guy. Thanks to all of you!
Don't forget those guitars and other instruments.

We are SO EXCITED about this little meet... another dream come true.
I also worked on a bunch of panels today... for the panel exchange and for the picnic. My energy level is building daily...
We are even managing to fit in some paying jobs between everything else.

Dan, Just wanting you to clarify the "panel exchange" Are you making up some blanks and then we paint or carve an image on them? Are the blanks enameled ready to go? What is the size? Do you have some one shot? Do we just bring brushes? Do you have a plotter and paint mask? LOL!! Thanks, D
Posted by Dan Sawatzky (Member # 88) on :
I suspect some folks are bringing a finished (or almost complete panel with them. Susan Banasky is dropping off about fifty 12" X 12 " white ( I believe) panels which are for the meet. The panels are off cuts from a cabinet shop I believe... I'll find out more tomorrow when Susan drops them off.
I'd like the theme of the panel jam area to be your favoriter letter... which can be lettered onto the panel in creative ways. But folks can paint whatever they want!
I also have TONS of small pieces of Precision Board of someopne wants to carve up a 3D piece by hand.
I have some OneShot paint and am getting some more. I also have tons of acrylics for folks to try. Most of my brushes are for acrylics but I do have a few quills which I will have out to use.
I'd appreciate it if foolks could bring their kits if they can.
I'll also be doing up some routed 3D samples which folks can paint if they like. I'll be doing a router demonstration and produce a few more at the meet. It will demonstrate the capabilities of the router as well as how we build the files.
As you know we don't have a plotter in our shop... and if you need paint mask, well... you are on your own.
Donna only lives a block away however and I'm sure she would cut somebody some vinyl or a mask if they need it.

OK, we know about the headquarters. What I want to know is where do you put the hindquarters? Can a person (other than Raymond) actually ride them things? When they're old, do they become Chihuahua food? Chipping glue for Letterhead panels?
Posted by Donna in BC (Member # 130) on :
LOL Dan...
Posted by Dan Sawatzky (Member # 88) on :
Only small folks like Phoebe.... & I guess Raymond too can ride the miniature horses. We even have some little saddles in the tack room. While ours are seldom ridden they are 'working' horses though as they are trained to pull small one person carts or buggies which we have a number of. The horses enjoy it too.
And when you visit the ranch David you better not mention chipping glue to Janis... or dog food either... she's kinda fond of her horses. Every animal on our place from the little horses, the pigmy goats and even all the chickens have names and are dearly loved. They are safe here and none of them will ever be eaten while they are in our care.
You can hug them all you want though.

Back to the subject at hand... the picnic that is...
I bought some local corn yesterday just to taste... sort of to get us in the mood for the picnic which is in only TWO WEEKS and ONE DAY away!!!! ... anyhow... I tried the early local corn.
It was TASTY! Sweet and tender.... MMMMMMMMMMM!!! Phoebe and I enjoyed it immensely. It was the first time Phoebe has had corn on the cob.... she likes it. She was chewin on the cob I gave her for the longest time.
But that was just a taste... and its early corn. In a couple of weeks the good stuff will be out. THATS the stuff we will be serving up at the picnic here at the ranch.
I can hardly wait!!!!
In other news... Susan Banasky and her husband stopped by today.... to drop off some items for the picnic. The panels are all primed and ready to go.... here in the shop. There's also a bag of goodies which we will be giving away.
Susan and her crew also did up some wonderful buttons for the meet... great little souvenirs for those who attend this first little meet here at the ranch!!!!! THANK YOU SUSAN!
The official meet panel is almost done... and other surprises are in the works.
ONLY 15 days to go!!!

I can't wait to meet your 'mini whinnies'!!
Can I bring horsey treats?
A:)
Posted by Dan Sawatzky (Member # 88) on :
Adrienne...
If you bring horsey treats you better bring a bagful... there's 10 of those little critters here at the ranch presently. And if you feed the horses something special then the goats get bent out of shape for they like equal treatment. There's three of them.
And the chickens like to be treated equal too... I think theres 6 or 7 of them. Rooster the cat likes to get in at the game too... along with Punky and Ditto the two little terriers.
And if they all get treats... well I like Tim Horton donuts... or platz from the deli. Phoebe kinda likes that stuff too! And you can't leave my crew out either.
And there could be 60 or more other folks at the ranch on Saturday who want equal treatment too.
So you may want to second guess your offer of horsey treats...

With the short lead time of this meet we are not doing an advence registration but just pay at the door. We'll have a little table there and issue name tags to make it easier for everyone.
Starting Monday morning we are in full picnic mode with preparations beginning in earnest for the meet. We were going to leave it until the final week but I just know that there will be unforseen things coming up which will distract us (like always). Now 100% confirmed and committed barring any plane or rental car issues. Arriving into Chilliwack Friday evening by car via YVR (Vancouver airport). Back out Sunday AM so we can be hanging signs by mid-afternoon.
Kurt got some energy back into his system as a result of the recent Zoo 2 meet and has always liked Dan’s work and attitude. Glad things are working out that we can attend “The Picnic”.
Dan, in advance!

Dan, we have one horse, 2 bull calves, 14 hens, 2 roosters and 2 one week old chicks...EVERYONE gets treats around here..
I JUST got back from Victoria this week, (where I introduced my best friend from CA 'Tim Bits'...she's HOOKED!!!!)
I'll see if I can pick up box on the way...can't guarantee they will ALL arrive tho.
Just WHAT do they put in those things that make them so addictive?????(and the coffee is just about the BEST coffee to go with a donut EVER!!) A:)

We will be serving Timbits for morning coffee break when the picnic starts... I've been running to Tim Hortons the last while to get the timing down to a science (for the picnic of course) I get Timbits for the crew... but very few have made it all the way back to the shop... hmmmm... I don't think I am addicted.... no way! ... I could stop anytime I really wanted to...
Phoebe likes them too! I just have to make sure all the crumbs are wiped off her face so her momma doesn't know I've been sharing. It's grampa's job to teach their grandkids about Tim Hortons... but mommas don't seem to understand very well.
We had another meal planning committee meeting today just to make sure all the details have been taken care of... I broke the news (gently) to my favorite mother-in-law that there were more than 40 folks coming to the picnic... more like 65 so far. We are now preparing for 75... so there's still time to sign up.
LOTS of fun to be had at the Picnic at the Ranch!
We are getting REALLY, REALLY excited now!!! (maybe its all the sugar from the Timbits) ONLY 12 days until the Picnic at the Ranch!

Don't forget your musical stuff. If anyone has an extra guitar, I'd sure appreciate you bringing it along. This will be the first time our Daughter Heather gets to see her Old Man paint. I'm excited. Forgive me if I showoff a bit. She's only 35!

Only ELEVEN DAYS to go now! We made good progress on things here at the shop today... my 3D meet panel is almost finished... did the gilding tonight... just details now. And my panel for the exchange is DONE!
We have another brief planning meeting on Thursday morning just to make sure we got all the numbers right. I've recieved plenty of offers for help from other heads which I appreciate greatly.
The phone is ringing regularly from folks who are coming... everyone is getting PUMPED! Talking to so many Letterheads on a regular basis has to be the most fun part of organizing an event like this...
This is going to be FUN!

Well I haven't built any barns before...but I have built several granaries (remember when they were built out of wood?...stoopid Fir joists and coated nails - like pounding into concrete...no there were no air nailers!...actually compressed air had just been invented. ) several garages and one outhouse...so if ya need help finishing the barn...I'll be there Friday noonish...if ya forgot to order porta potties...I'll bang up a couple from the offcuts from the barn...and I'll even paint up some "Watch for Slivers" signs...geeze can I come now...I'm just too excited to work anyway...on second thought I haven't even started my panel yet...I haven't learned anything about being first have I dan. ...I'll probably finish it in the airport knowing me..."Why do something today that you can put off 'til tomorrow?"...Know wonder they call me dog...I seem to need to "dogg" it...okay I'm done...for now...really.

I'm still pinching myself every morning to see if this is all real... then I look at the to do list and realize ... yup its real and its time to get busy!
I'm sure there will be a few last minute things left to do when you get here Duncan.... but the barn is done... I fabricated and hung the door yesterday. The fence is up and the horses are in it at night. There's even hay in the storage area!
Although I have air nailers of every size I pounded all the nails by hand on this litte project.... just for old times sake. And I got a couple of blisters to prove it too. I got to hear lots of stories from my dad about how THEY did things in the REAL old days.
Its back to work in the shop now...
Havin fun at the ranch...

Letterhead meets are a wonderful opportunity to make new friends... even in your own community.
There is a local fellow named Michael here who still insists on doing all his signs the old way - with a brush and paint. I didn't even see a computer in his shop. He has a wicked script and creative mind and his work stands out from everything else produced locally.
I dropped in on him a while back for a little visit. We chatted and then I went on my way. Before I left I gave him a standing invitation to drop in sometime. So far he has been too busy to swing by.
Today I dropped by his shop again but he was out. I did call the number on the door however and spoke with him on the phone. I passed on a personal invite to the Picnic which happens in ONLY 9 days. He had a vague idea of what Letterhead gatherings were all about and expressed an interest in dropping by to sling some paint with us on Saturday.
It will be great to see him there with all the rest of my friends, both new and old. Hopefully Michael will discover the joy of BEING a Letterhead instead of working in relative isolation.
At the very least I will get a return visit from someone who's work I have long admired.

For those of us not from the Maple Leaf country, here is some info I got from a race site about entering Canada.
"Border Crossing - Very Important We're going into a foreign country! Please respect customs' laws. Since we are crossing into Canada, you are REQUIRED to carry ID establishing citizenship: driver's license AND birth certificate or passport are required."
If you even question what you may need, bring it all or at least 2 forms.

Speaking of sleep, just got back to my room from an installation and need to catch some zzz’s before heading back to the location to finish up before the flight.

Pressure washing is generally way down on my list of things I like to do. Its messy, wet and most often a cold and nasty job.
But we are in the middle of a HEAT WAVE here on the west coast. I've spent more than enough summers in the mid-west and in the south to know that a heat wave here doesn't really compare to what others get... but for us its a genuine heat wave.
Yesterday the thermometer on my truck registered 103 F or 38 C which is at or near record temps for these parts. We don't have air conditioning in our shop or house... as it generally isn't required.
Its time to hunker down in the shade with some ice tea... or better yet do that pressure washing I've been pushing to the back of my list.
All the parts of the 'ranch' should be nice and clean by the time I get down to a comfortable temperature.
ONLY SIX MORE DAYS UNTIL THE PICNIC!!!

There's ONLY five more days until the Picnic!!! Now we are down to the crunch! Still lots to do but the important stuff is ready to go.
This week will go by in a flash as we make the necessary signs to point folks around our place. The shop and studio will get one last straightening up and sweep. And the easels and tables will get set up shortly.... the paint laid out and everything else set in its proper place.
We are starting to watch the long term weather forecast... too vague to bet on yet but it looks good.
The MultiCam is busy churning out some panels for the meet while we do other things...

For those Letterheads who are coming but haven't been to a meet before...
First off.... relax. This is a laid back event... We all attended our first meet sometime back and we all survived.
Instead of being intimidated by the more experienced artists in attendance think of it as the most awesome opportunity to learn and make new friends. Introduce yourselves to everyone there... they will even be wearing nametags to make it easy. (I know I tend to forget names so it sure makes it easy for me)
There will be a panel jam area set up with brushes, paint and panels ready to go. Chances are the other folks you see painting there will be experienced... (or faking as best they can like me). Watch what they are doing... ask questions... ask others to help you... even copy what you see to learn. But DO get involved. You will probably amaze youreself with the result.
I'll even have some routed panels done... and they only require paint... not too hard if you've ever held a brush.
We will do our best to get you what you want, to serve your needs... but makeyourself at home. If you are thirsty, dig what you like from a cooler or fridge. Pour yourself a coffee. Grab a chair and set it up amongst some folks who look like they know what they are talking about. Introduce yourself. Share what you know.
Wander around the shop and studio... take it all in. Chances are there will be some things on display which you haven't yet had a chance to do. Ask about what you see... learn!
My crew will be wearing nametags like everyone else, but will also have a ribbon underneath to let you know we belong here at the ranch. If you need anything let us know.
Don't forget to sign in on the wall of fame.
Above all... just RELAX and HAVE FUN!!
ONLY FOUR MORE DAYS!!!

We have a couple more treats for those in attendance... we are pulling out ALL the stops!

It was a crazy day at the ranch... one step forward... two steps back. But we all need those kind of days to appreciate the ones where everything goes right. Thank goodness Phoebe was handy to give me as big a hug as she could muster whenever I was starting to get stressed out.
Things are looking good. We have much more done than I thought we would before the picnic... but we have reached the point where we are beginning to cross things off the list which won't get done. All the important things are ready... but the wish list is getting whittle down fast... no point in stressing needlessly.
SCOOPS is waiting patiently for the guests to arrive. The panels are ready. The paint is all laid out. The MultiCam is getting tuned up tomorrow morning...
Everything is ready except for a few little details which we will take care of tomorrow. Friday afternoon we set up the tents and tables, set out the chairs... all ready for Saturday morning.
We still need a bunch of quicky signs to point folks in the right direction.... its a good thing this is a SIGNPAINTER'S meet. I should be able to find someone to do some lettering.

Hey Dan? I hav'nt been to BC in over 10 years, and I've been to chilliwack before but that was 28 years ago... I'd love to see the "Super Natural" Province once agaim.

Adrienne... There are lots of places to eat in that area in Chilliwack. Janis & I most often go to Earl's when we go out to dinner. For casual we go to a little place right here in Yarrow... the Rosedale. Its just a tiny place but the food is good and prices reasonable... Canadian and Chinese. That's where Duncan & I will be eating on Friday night.
Anyone else who is in the area is welcome to join us and drop in at the ranch too if you like. Supper will be 6-6:30 or so. We'll be wrapped up in last minute chores, setting things up for the meet. If you show you can count on being put to work I'm sure.

With a few heads coming in early (to help set up the tents, chairs, and such it will really start tomorrow just after noon. I pick up Duncan at the Abbotsford airport at 12:30... then its Letterhead time!
Its time for a PICNIC at the RANCH!!!

DIRECTIONS TO THE RANCH
Getting here is pretty easy. Going east on the HWY 1 take 104 exit onto #3 road. Head east. Follow the signs to Cultus Lake/Yarrow. The road winds some with some 90 degree turns and a stop sign along the way. I've never clocked it but I would guess perhaps 5 miles off the freeway. Keep on number 3 road until you hit a T intersection with a stop sign right in Yarrow. Its by the door plant. Turn LEFT onto Yarrow Central Road. You are ALMOST THERE! Go through town until you are at the fire hall... we are across the road... 42392 Yarrow Central Road. We'll have BIG sign out front and there should be lots of sign type cars around.
Parking is on the street or in our neighbors yard. I'll have someone posted at our gate to let you know where the best spot is at the time.
We look forward to seeing you at the PICNIC!!!!!!

Yeah, so last night I we were sitting at the supper table. And I said "Sigh.........I would really like to go for a picnic this weekend." I got the what are you talking about now Mom, look from my teenage daughters, as usual. And this deer in the headlights look from my husband. 'Cause he knows when I come out with a line like that there's going to be another line behind it. "Oh yeah?" says he, quickly to get the word in before the next line. "When will we fit that in? Friday night is another grand opening to yet another one of your sign clients' new ventures. Sat.is the car show, Sunday we are all helping to put that truckload of mulch that's sitting in the driveway on all the flowerbeds. And you want to go for a picnic. Right. Where would you want to squeeze that in now?"
So anyway, I guess I'm not going to make it.
So I hope your next one is gonna be in 2008 Dan. Because I am hitting Kelly's and the East Coast next year, all within a month. And I think if I say I want to hit B.C. too I might be tossed out on my keester. Have fun everybody! Wish I was going. Man...... this is worse than missing Lodi. Talk about feeling sorry for myself. Still going to try to make it for dinner but my plans got changed on me.
Had a firecall at 2am this morning, big house, total loss, but everyone got out safe.
I unfortunately went to the hospital with smoke inhalation, I was eating it pretty good there for awhile, and couldnt catch up with my breathing, so the ambulance packed me off.
Have to head back to the hostipal in about an hour from now for some chest xrays, blood workup, and a lung function test.
Hopefully wont take that long, and if they get through it quick enough and release me, I hope to see ya for dinner still. If not, guess I'll hope to make it for saturday morning.
Wish me luck! looking forward to a nice dinner!

I hope you guys have a great time with Grandpa. While all of you are partying, I will still be here just keeping my nose to the grindstone. You know, SOMEONE has to actually work every once in a while.
It will be a very special event, I know. I'll wait for the news at 11.
Whenever the Big One is scheduled you can be sure that I will be there. Probably even bring along a few samples just to show Sawatzky what a "pea shooter" can do...at about third the cost.
Have a blast everyone.

Wish we could be there! It's just TOOO far for us right now. Maybe the next one. Hope you ALL have a great time! I'll be thinking about you all when I'm getting my manicure and sitting in the massage chair for my pedicure on my birthday! Small consolation prize I guess, but better than coal, cobs and a stick we used to get promised when we were kids on our birthday ,if we were bad!! hehehehe

Hey Duncan,
Are you packing light? If so I can probably pick you up on the way to the 'ranch. Leave G'Dan with the hosting duties.
Oh I'll be on a motorcycle..that might make a difference if you're afraid of them or intend to wear flip-flops. It will have room for a few things its a big bike with hardcases.
Let me know,
Gerald

UPDATE: Fri July 29 11:36 pm
Letterheads are being spotted EVERYWHERE in downtown remote Yarrow! I missed dinner, but Cody and I spotted a gang outside of the local restaurant and had to run up for some hugs. Very surreal to see our far away buds just standing in the smallest town you can imagine. It sure is great to see those familar as well as new smiling faces!
The Ranch is looking incredible. Dan and his crew have done so much work in the past little while, which will be evident in pictures to come.
It's party time!

With a LOT of help from friends, family, employees, neighbors and everyone else I could talk inhto it we are ready to Picnic.
About 20 heads showed up yesterday and they too were pressed into service to get ready...
NOW ITS PICNIC TIME!!! I'm off to Tim Hortons to get the donuts and then we OFFICIALLY begin.
And yes I DID get about 7 hours of GOOD sleep last night with a BIG ol' grin on my face.

Dan, I hope everyone had a great time, I'm sure it was fun. I intend to get over to your place one day, let me know when the Big One is on. I would love to have been there but this weekend was rather busy for us. Jayne and I attended a two day first aid course plus on Saturday night we a had our daughter Kates engagement party at home as well. Looks like we will be in Tonga at Easter for the wedding.
