Hi everybody. I have a question about Extira. We have never used this product before and we are confused about what is the best paint to use on it. We primarily use latex for backgrounds and borders and 1-shot for the copy on most of our signs. If anyone has experience with this stuff...could you let me know what you recommend or have had good results with?
Thanks so much, Lisa Waters Sign Design of Roanoke, Inc.

Lisa:
Do a search on this topic. A thread ran a few weeks (months?) ago that discussed the need to prep Extira in order for paint to adhere properly.
We used it a few times and found that even Matthews acrylic urethane didn't hold up well on it. I guess paint has trouble adhering unless it's properly prepped.

Lisa,
Please go to the following link. It's a Guide Sheet we developed for sign makers to aid them in selecting primers, topcoats, and other finishing material.
Extira will work with a variety of primers and topcoats. The important thing to keep in mind is to use a suface sealer first, if you need to apply masking agents for sandblasting or finish painting.
You can also contact our HeldDesk for more detailed information through the Extira link below.
Thanks,
Mike

The only thing I know about it is if you have an erectin that lasts for more than 4 hours you should see your doctor.

I've used it. The stuff is basically waterproof by itself. I put on a couple of layers of Jay Cooks primer. It seems to lose its Medex-like smoothness when you do that after the first coat, but sand a little and put on some more primer. One Shot silver looked very smooth after a couple of coats of primer. It's easier to paint then foam but if you treat it as if were foam, you'll get a very smooth finish, and why wouldn't latex work as a top coat. It should be no problem.
