Oh I'm in deep now.

Since I've read the HDU Prices thread, I've got to run this project by the L'heads.

I seemingly have the job to redo some gateway signage. It's a 16ft tower with 3 sides, triangular, ya know, with a 7.5'X8' panel on each side, each side a different sign. The top of the panels are trimmed like an old west building with lighting within the cornise work..And to top it off, there's a 74" long scale locomotive on tracks, on a partial trussel bridge mounted to the very top. Oh and I can't forget disassembling the old crap and recladding and painting the original steel towers.

AND THE BIG TOPPER..is that there are 3 of those towers!!

It could be good, it could be frustrating, because I'm working with 3 levels of government on this one..Local Chamber of Commerce, Municipal and Provincial..

What do you guys and gals think?

Oh and here's another question. The Chamber loves my proposal designs so much that they want specific renderings to print on 186 banners ( I'm not doing the banners) I've been doing this "work" so far, for nothing. They are willing to pay for the renderings, which are the actual models I'll cut via CNC for the gateway signs. How do I figure this one out? I don't think I can charge for all the time I've taken to build the train in this banner job...That will be paid for via the big job..right? But it would be nice to get a fair amount of $$ for 4 different layouts for the banners..

Thanks for any help

Watch out,, CofC ,, watch out
Also the CofC is not a government agency, it is a group of persons who pay dues to play..
I do not know of any one who has made money from a chamber.. good luck

My quesion is,, They are goona use your renderings on banners.. Why do they NOT let you do the banners too?

And if you do not have a contract watch out as well. They have all kinds of buddies they have to feed. And ive seen it done where the guy like you works your butt off and then not get any cream..

Well, I know they are not a goverment agency, but they might as well be. But the closely linked Business Improvement association is a municipally funded entity..OK 3 govs and a CofC..Like I said, I could be in for a ride.

As for not doing the banners, I'm not equipped for that kinda job and the BIA already has a quote on the lot..I'm not stepping into that.
Had they approached me first , I'd've found a way.

( I'd've :how's that for an abbreviation?)

Thanks for the warning

whut Cutis said - watch out - I just had the rug pulled out from me last week - $9,000 worth of signs I lost cuz one of my customers contacted the other - I still made $800 for cuttin vynull but it still sucked - then they had the gall to call me to install the signs that they bought elsewhere - my response was - well, I'm kinda busy right now, I might can catch up wid ya next week sometime. . . .I'm not really interested installing signs they did'nt even buy from me - - maybey if I just jack the price 50 bucks they'll git the message?

i doubt this job will ever get started. by the time you go thru all paperwork attorneys, notorizng, and then trying to close with prez bush, meeting with cpa's and several neighborhood and church commitees......all about this job will be forgotten, there just sound slike too much damn politics in this one [Rolling On The Floor]

Oh no, no, NO! Get everything in writing!! If the Chamber loves the work so much - you must be compensated for it. Including any drawings/renderings done thus far. And insist on doing the banners if you can handle the work - say it's part of the signage package to provide them, and that you have to have control of the quality of the products. Insist on having the people in power on each level of government that you are dealing with sign the contract - no exceptions.

Will do..
But just to say though my "client" is not the CofC, but the BIA. I confuse the 2 because they share an office..

Now back to question ONE: regardless of who the customer is , what should this tower project cost?

Cheers,

I would charge plenty and then double plenty once more for a total of a lot. How's that for a direct answer? [Smile]

I have a hard time with estimates when I can't see firsthand whats involved. One reason I never quote over the phone.

I only quote when I have every detail worked out. I'm still having a hard time visualizing in my minds eye what you are describing.

Gerald,
These towers sound interesting. Got any pictures of the site that you can post?
Keep your designs seperate from the sign project and don't let them use your designs without being compensated first. Plus, there's no reason why you shouldn't bid the banners. If your bid isn't competitive, your license fee for them to use the designs on the 186 banners (only) should be at least 10% of the banner order. Any additional usage requires a seperate agreement.
Quoting HDU without a design is a crap shoot at best. If I was to shoot from the hip, I would estimate $125 sq. ft. Reinforcing the signs and installation would be additional.
I'm not going to touch the tower thing. Just quote time and materials there but, if you ask me, it sounds like a real can of worms.

Havin' fun,

Checkers

I realize the most likely problems with this job.
But there are more reasons for me to do it than $$. The towers are just a block or so from my shop. It would be gr8 advertising. Plus the area is a bit depressed. There is a whole lot of road construction going on and the town centre is a bit cut of at the moment. EVERY merchant is screaming for new gateway signs. MUST attract new customers!!
I want this area to thrive, and I can help.
Plus I'd really like to build it..

So here are a few pics before and proposed after.
I have not..REPEAT..have not started to design the panels yet..I only put something there to show what will go there.

As for the banners..I'll post a new question..

Thanks

Now that makes a difference. I originally thought you meant a radio antennae tower and the panels were 8"w.x 8'h. so my price would have been way off.
