I've been practicing painting our mural here in the studio... so far I've painted it twenty three times with only Phoebe helping and she isn't as tall as Raymond so she can only reach the very bottom bits. She does have the wiggly line technque nailed though. We have the time down to 15 hours 26 minutes and 43 seconds.

With help from a wonderful team I think we can do even better than that by far when we get onsite. I want to get the mural done before everyone gets too much into the wine. The wiggly lines may just get out of hand.

I'll bet Jay can't even finish his maquette that fast and I haven't heard ANYTHING from the other pokey project leaders. [Smile]

Its looking to be a fabulous group of fine folks at this event... DIAL that number!!!!!

Hi Tony,

I was checking into flights today for myself and my daughter. I'm coming out for sure and will get some money to you as soon as I can. I'm working on a panel right now for the event and hope to have it done in the next week or so.

Since Jay doesn't have his maquette done YET, I'll be over helping Grampa Dan do some bent lines. (I have my mural design almost done for the Jacksonville meet, which is a month later than the Lodi meet?) I'm starting to get concerned for that Mr. Allen guy. Hopefully he won't get too flustered and have another eyebrow incident before the meet!

After we finish our mural first, we'll have time to travel around the area for a day or two, see some sights! Shouldn't take us too long, given good weather, I can sling a 1000 feet mural in a week by myself.....Grampa Dan you ready?

Looking forward to coming out.

I was talking to Gary Anderson a few days ago and he has not finished his design yet either. He had it in his head but not on paper.

He is shipping some Porter paint out early, so with some quality paint he probably will be finishing up about the time that Dan is getting through with his wiggly line class and teaching all the cheers and insults that will used against other teams.

Posted by Tony Segale (Member # 1380) on :

Dan...if there is any competition for completion time, I'll bring stopwatches. Part of the lure for the Saturday night Wine & Art Stroll is to watch the artists paint while you enjoy your cabernet. So, I suggest painting 3 hours friday and then three hours saturday night, maybe from 5-8pm. Maybe, your team can squeeze in a round of golf each day.

Dale, look forward to seeing you register soon, and get an opportunity to win some of these great gifts.

And Ray, maybe we can set a digital print cut-out of you at the altar, so you won't miss this wild west shoot-out....

Jay will have the services of Steven "Blitz Fitch" Vigeant on his team which should make up for some lack of prep-time. And... I'm planning on bringing rollers, lots of rollers.
Tony I'll be signing up soon. I'm going to work on getting some small rag & striper type rollers donated.

Posted by Jay Allen (Member # 195) on :

That's right - I have Steve AND Bill Riedel helping me!!! Now THAT is some prime heavy hitting to build on!! I'll be courting some of our northern neighbors to come on board and help too since Sawatzk'eh won't let his muralists go potty.

And Tony, you chose not to tell Dan about my maquette, didn't you??? I have tentative approval for my design - but son-of-a-gun, Tony's dog ate it and now I have to start over.

I may never get done. sigh . . . . .

Posted by Dale Manor (Member # 4858) on :

Hey Jay, where's that mural art? Maybe you could ask one of the incridibly talented people you have signed up to help paint on the mystery mural to lend you a hand with the maquette?

Since I have my concept finished for the JACKSONVILLE meet (a month later than Lodi) perhaps I could give you a hand. No wait, I have to practice the rapid application of squiggly lines! And finish up my panel for the event.

Looking forward to seeing your concept...what say you, maybe, May 29th or so...no wait i'll be sight seeing by then!

Careful that pooch doesn't get too close to the eyebrow there!

good luck there buddy......you know, we kid because we care!

THE DOG ATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I used that excuse in the first grade Jay... and I didn't get away with it then.

Did you ask your wife if she wanted to paint on a FUN project Jay?? It sounds like she' not painting on your mural with the list you gave.

You sent your design, Jay?
I found a layout my parakeet was working on, I didn't know that was yours. I'll be changing her cage tomorrow morning, I'll see what I can salvage. Are you sure you sent me something?

Steve....glad to hear someone close by will make it..but did Jay pick you because of your pink hat?
I know the girls go crazy here for guys who are brave enough to wear pink.

Duncan Wilkie is a man of his word, when he says "I will be in Lodi", he means it! I just received his registration minutes ago. Very nice to meet you via telephone, and Lori, too. It's wonderful when you get to meet new friends, and their very nice, too!

That being said, it is time to raise that wine glass again and give another toast to

Laura, it's $425 with tax from Chicago to SF - on United even - their hub!!!! (Sacramento is only 40 min. away - check there too) I'd jump on it if I were you. That's a great price. I wonder how much to fly to Detroit first? hmmmm . . .

Tony, THAT was my design in your birds cage!! Anybody know how to paint bird dookie? I hope we can get that in the projector for our layout now. Isn't it supposed to lay flat?

No - Stevey V. chose our wall since we knew each other already. But since he mentioned it - please bring your hat for the weekend. You'll fit right in on Team Pink.

And for those who want to help me, I can't pay for everyone's shorts (thinking about team T-shirts instead), here is a link to buy the offical Jay Allen brand 'Pink Shorts': Team Pink Shorts

The best part about painting in pink shorts? You don't care if you get paint on them!!

Jay, there is a trick to finding a cheaper than cheap flight. When I go to yahoo travel, I pick "my times are flexible". I made it all the way thru to putting my credit card in. I hadn't talked to my husband though so I couldn't complete it.

Jay might cry foul but you are more than welcome to lay some paint on my wall if you like. Contrary to what Jay says I will allow the occasional potty break.

Dan, Jack is from Peoria, Illinois - just about an hour south of here. He can't work on your wall or he'd be breaking the former resident laws of the great state of Illinois!!

You don't want the poor man doing hard time, do you? What kind of slavedriver are you? Read his post again, Jack - he said the OCCASIONAL potty break. After age 40, occasional won't do anymore.

Can I count on ya' for at least some of the time, Jack? You don't have to wear pink shorts - unless you want to.

It's gonna be a great time - except for those poor slaves over at Sawatzk'eh's wall. We'll have to take them some extra bread and water when Dan isn't looking.

I spotted one of Jay's mural painting crew the other day. She said she was waiting to catch a bus to head down to Illinois so she could help Jay finish his maquette. She is worried she won't have anything to paint on once Memorial weekend rolls around.

 -

She also said Jay is making her wear the longer version of the "Official" pink team uniform shorts. She couldn't understand why? She said she'd rather work on her tan a bit as long as she's in California.

Talk about frequent potty breaks!

Well at least you have help coming soon Jay!

MOM!!!

How'd you get that picture of her, Dale?

Thank you for coming to help out, Ma!! (She's a little flaky - but I think you'll like her. I do - she's my Mom)

See the resemblance? I just wish she'd give up smoking. But she's lived this long - so I guess I should leave her alone.

Parents. Can't live with 'em until you're 40 - can't be here without 'em.

Jay, It looks like yur Mom has only ONE EYEBROW AS WELL....? Has your eyebrow grown back yet?

Posted by Jay Allen (Member # 195) on :

Yes it has, Mike. Three times the thickness it was before I stupidly shaved it off.

Now I look like I have a comb over one eye. Or electrical tape.

Imagine Groucho Marx with only one eyebrow. That's me. I guess I could always shave it off again and make a nice big fitch from it.

If you come to Lodi, please don't stare. I'm a little self-conscious about it.

Dangit Jeff - I've been walking around since September looking like I was born near a nuclear plant and all I had to do was shave the other one off to balance. Duh.

Is it me - or am I just plain stupid?

Gotta go shave. Thanks for the tip!! Now I'll have two fitches to paint with!!

for those who wish to fly into San Francisco...
you can take an Amtrak train from San Francisco to Sacramento then south to Lodi for $29.00.
And the Lodi Train Depot is across the street to the south from where Mark Oatis' mural will be painted.

That is pretty cool!

Well, I'd be there, but the fair would be in the thousandsssss. Besides I don't think any good Letterhead would be interested in how an Accubend bends channel letters!!!!!! as this is what I am doing in the Sydney area. We use led's. Wish I could be at a good old fashioned Letterheds meeting. Here in Oz they want more then $300.00 for a non-participant! I miss my lettehead friends a great deal. Cheers mate.

I just talked with an old friend that moved to CA years ago and asked where she was in relation to Lodi. Turns out she is in Santa Rosa...108 miles away and would love to see me if I come to the meet. Boy this is getting more tempting. Now if I could only talk my husband into it.

Let's see..fly into San Francisco, spend a day in the city before or after the meet, drive over to Santa Rosa, stay with an old friend, drive thru Napa Valley, heading to Lodi, but first, stop and tour the Jelly Bean factory in Fairfield, continue on to Lodi by the highways thru the California Delta, crossing four bridges, seeing the wildlife, boaters and skiers on the water, head into the Lodi Wine Country, relax in the cool evening breezes...should I stay or should I go?

As a fifth generation California Native, this is a pretty harsh place to live....

One of the best things about any of the walldog or letterhead gatherings, as we all know, are the new friends we meet. We obtain the business cards and contact info and sometimes it's still good six years later, and sometimes it isn't.

I have personally addressed a bunch of these registration flyers to people I have met, some I still need to get in the mail...

But, today, I received a check and registration form from a woman I met in Vinton, Iowa, September 2000, as we worked together on Bill Hueg's mural.

Maria Casad, thank you and welcome to Lodi.
Maria has the Design Studio in Dewitt, Iowa, she is a colors and interiors consultant, murals and etched glass. Maria and her partner Bob Rands we be here in May.

So, here is an update list of paid artists attending......

I asked my committee from the beginning, if you want this to happen, Lodi should be able to roll out the red carpet and knock your socks off.

My committee is doing just that. I can't thank them enough. And individual citizens have been coming to my home based business to donate money to this project, and offer their homes for artists in need.

This is already a memory of a lifetime for me (countless pages and books of notes taken).
Thanks to all of you who can make it, and those who wish they could....we'll do the Letterhead and Walldog groups justice here in May.

Hmmmm, the "Box" is coming??? Just might have to come...of course I won't know for sure until nite before, but imagine gate won't close because of lateness, will it?

Posted by Tony Segale (Member # 1380) on :

Frank,
no the gate won't close...it would be good to know early enough to plan the meals reserve your t-shirt and other fabulous collectibles....plus if you register early, you save $25, and get in the running for some other fabulous prizes

...but no, the gate will not be closed, there's way to much "good stuff" here to close the gates.

Posted by Frank Magoo (Member # 3950) on :

Tony, thanks...as I march by a different beat, those enticements mean little, thanks all the same...w/my narrow diet band, I provide culinary needs and I own three dressers FULL of t-shirts, some I know I own but haven't seen in over 20 years and the $25 bucks is cheap price for being on the fence, I'm truly sorry I can't commit at this time, but as soon as that changes, I'll be either sending you entry or showing up, heheheh...
As I'm already in midst of a major change w/o end here and facing two major events this month, timing and money have to come together perfectly for me to do Lodi, even though I crave this one...reality of life...we'll see what wrings out and if it's in the cards for me, I'll be there, w/extra $25 in pocket, heheheh...
Be great to mingle w/ol friends like Barlow, Alicia, the Purcells, Robin, Mr. Arnott, Fernando, Dawn, and oh ya, the "Box", heheheh...and put a face to many more coming I've met online but haven't had the pleasure of meeting up close, that could change with alittle luck. Just saying this will have Ron Purcell sending me a gold project to change my luck, last time it worked Ron!!! Go for it!!!! lol

Ingrid and Joe!!! Cool!!

I'm really looking forward to seeing them both again!! They "met" in Belvidere - as did Mary and Alton Gillespie. I feel like Cupid!!

Think pink. See you in a few weeks.

Hey Frank,
Come to Lodi so I can meet you. [Smile]
Does that help entice you? Be nice [Wink]

Posted by Frank Magoo (Member # 3950) on :

Heheh Kelly; I'm so nice, I'm dripping...and of course, it will be a pleasure to meet you...along w/others I've never face to faced...that is....IF I can wrangle out of here w/enough time and money to pull off a weekend trist....(indicators at this moment aren't good)

Adrienne! It would be SO good to see you!
It's Memorial Day Weekend...May 25-29.

and Larry Underhill's office is about four doors away from me...

ealy sunday morning, off to work on a wall...
crrunch time, trying to finsh jobs (?) that were put behind because of all the rain...
25 days to go
9 walls to prep
10 scissor lifts coming
4 rolling scaffolds...
not enough space to list all that needs to be done...

see you all soon

oh yeah, a lot of letterheads ask if there will be a panel area, or a shop to go to...
the shop is one big 2x4 block area of walls...
that's it, producing nine murals from start to finish in 3 1/2 days is the goal...

cheers

I hate when I come back from a meet and find out there was a Letterville Resident I didn't get to meet there. So I'm making up a "Hit List" of Residents registered for the meet. If I don't introduce myself to you, please lasso me and say hi. I've met about 1/3 of this talented group already...can't wait to meet the rest of y'all.

edited to say... "If I missed anyone or butchered your name, please post to that effect and I'll update the "Post Office" [Rolling On The Floor]

Is anybody in those pics under the age of 40? I know I'm sure not!!

What do we know that nobody else does? Could it be that for those few days of a meet are actually the 'fountain of youth'?

Just thinking out loud . . . . .

Looking forward to new friendships - and rekindled ones as well. 2 weeks - 3 days until I'm there. That's not long!!

Don't be hatin' now ladies!! I did say "Is there anybody...."

I'm proud of my age (at least for now) - but I must admit, I chose to phrase it as a question rather than make a blanket statement as it pertained to the ladies. Some of you don't quite look like you've hit that marker yet - I suppose I was more speaking about the guys.

And I could be wrong there too. But the BULK of us are at or around that age. And all signing up for a weekend of "hard" work and "hard" fun!!

I bet we all outwork any of the "youngin's" that weekend!! With age comes wisdom......

And for what it's worth - I add 10 years to my age. Then EVERYBODY tells you how great you look instead of whispering behind their hands that ther'es "no way in hell that he is XX years old". If you can't beat 'em - join 'em.

It's a lie - but it sure feels good. Problem is, nobody ever believes me. I suppose that is a good thing? [Wink]

Jay, those pink shorts have to subtract at least a few years?

I always feel a lot younger at a meet, that is until I stay up for 18 hours a day for a few days in a row!

Looking forward to seeing you again there Bud, but I'm not giving you my real age...you'll have to guess.

c-ya there

I may actually have to hand letter a wall here in Dallas in a few weeks. Since Chapman will be too busy figuring out his ShopBot to give me emergency lessons, this guy will become a Wallpuppy. I'm gonna be Stuck in Lodi Again--well, actually stuck for the first time, since I've never been there.

I'll get in Friday morning, bleary eyed and bushy headed, and leave on Tuesday. I'll be staying with friends who will also get me to and from the airport.

I think I'll start on Sawatzky's wall since I probably have wiggly already mastered. I'll be on the wall Friday, Saturday afternoon and some on Sunday. Monday, we check out Yosemite. Expottyia.com reserved me some potty breaks so I should be able to endure.

I look forward to meeting many BB Buddies. I'll get my late registration in next week.

We may be in big trouble on the Sawatzky Wall!!!!! [Eek!]
Full bladders and David's humor could be a recipe for disaster. [Razz]

Once David paints with me Raymond will NEVER be able to teach him straight hand lettering. Oh well... wiggly lines are more fun anyway.

The crew at Lodi looks to be more fun all the time!

This is going to be ONE COOL MEET!

Look out Jay!

Well David, picking up a brush at last.

It really hurts that I was within a rock throwing distance of you in Fort Worth and you choose to fly all the way to California to work with one of those immigrants.

Dan...don't get too excited - Harding will probably have another grandkid and not be able to make it. At least, that's the story that he's always telling me.

Man, I'm getting pretty worked up about this meet...more than any I've gone to....must be the long trip across the continent has me all pepped up.. And seeing alot of folks on the board for the first time... I'm ready to leave NOW...!!

I just printed out the Downtown Mural Map and I'd sure like to know which featured muralists are responsible for which murals.

Hey, Tony - Please list me by Victoria Colella, not Christiansen.

Look forward to meeting you all!

Thanks for the list Tony & Michael. Its great to know the general layout of the neighborhood and who's painting where.

It looks like everyone will get lots of excerise to see everything that's going on in town!

Only a few more days now!!!

Thank you for the list Michael and Tony. Now my next project is to find mural examples from each of these artists. I've checked the Letterhead database, but have to say I've found only a few.

I am obviously missing something. Clues?

Victoria

Posted by Dan Sawatzky (Member # 88) on :

Victoria

Google each of the artists names and you may come up with some more information and examples of their murals. Back issues of SignCraft and the contest issues of Signs of the Times (in years past) also has some examples of their mural work.

Once you get to Lodi you will be able to go around to the various mural sites and take a look at the maquettes of each artist, see just how many artists are working on the murals. Some murals are smaller and there may be enough folks already lined up for those projects. If so don't take it personally, just move on to another work space.

You don't HAVE to work only on one project either. Jump around to get experience at various techniques and methods of mural making. This is about learning!

Most importantly DO NOT be shy or intimidated. All the leaders and walldogs are VERY approachable. JUMP IN AND HAVE FUN!

See you in LODI!!!

Man! [Applause] I'm throwing a fit now! I believe It's gonna be like I've died and gone to "Mural Heaven" when we get to Lodi! I'm so psyched! Look at all those gods of the brush directing this project!! I can hardly wait to see where I get to work and who I get to work with.Anyone else as excited as me?...

This will be my first walldog event and I am so excited to be there, not only to be painting the murals but most of all to meet all of you. I have admired many of you through your work, your tutorials and input. It will be awesome to put the faces with the names I have known and read over the years.
