I'm working on a design for a beauty salon (don't get me started )and the name on it is Uhngi (pronounced Oooon-zhee). Apparently it's Korean. The problem is there's no way to make Uhngi an attractive word - seems no matter what kind of letterstyle I use, it just looks wrong. Ont op of that they want red copy on white... I hate beauty salons...

How about a chinease style writing with broad brush strokes? I mean, its not like the public is going to be able to read it anyway! (even if it was helvetica)

Ughhhhh the dreaded Beauty Salon sign! It's hard enough pleasing those Prissy clients to begin with, but with a name like that. I tried typing it out and yeah its pretty tough making that name look nice! Good luck!

me cut you hair long time....

What did you call me?
Cam, try some loose script for it and stylize it. Of course, it depends itf its an upscale place that charges 100 bucks a cut or a quick cuts place.

Here's my five-minute take on it!

Too busy to draw it out right now, but something based on the 'Emporer & his new clothes theory". A festive looking, compacted, upper and lower case deal, all on a mild 'wave' with a star for the dot in the i, and a prominent exclamation point after ther word, and last but not least, radiant lines coming out from the main body.
It is hoped that people will think it is some important, party festive thing, and overlook the awkward-ness of the name.
Rough sketch later, Lord willing.

I like what Suelynn did...the leaves in the background are cool too. Maybe you can add leaves and hair curls together in the background.

sometimes it best to just spell it out!

Nice try Linnie...but if it is a Korean shop...it won't work! Teir style of letters is completely different.
Cam...red is a sign of good luck and yellow/gold is a sign of money! how about something like this:

OMG, a beauty shop; what a bunch of prima donnas! I'll trade you two realtors for them.
If you're going to do upper and lower case, put a swash or something under it.

Maybe we should all do each other's jobs – it's obviously far more fun than doing our own!

I think some of these salon people LIKE the fact that no one can pronounce the name properly, like its some status symbol if you know DO know how.. but anyway I think if you maybe did the pronunciation thing in a subtle manner it might look nice.. maybe even put the definition to add to the dictionary nature.

Very Impressive Arthur!!!

Love it Arthur...what's the font you used?

Arthur gets my vote

Hmmmnn... a beauty salon that makes you look uhngi.... gotta try that sometime!
I like Bob's and Sir Arthur's...show them all to the client, let them decide the direction they would like to take.

Depends what kinda beauty shop it is!
First I would find out what "Uhngi" means, see if it represents anything that could be utilized in the sign design. None of my sources has a translation into English.
Are they targeting euro trash thus requiring a more stiff layout (Helvetica squashed kind flat, all lowercase)
Are they targeting class where something like Arthur's would work well.
Or are they targeting the younger set where something loose, fun and funky would be needed?

Thank you for the plaudits, they are very much appreciated. Brenda, I occasionally make fonts and the script is one I'm working on at the moment, should be ready for release early in the new year. The sans is Blair from ITC. Thanks again.

Well Arthur, you now have a new name for your nice new script: "Beauty Salon", or Uhngi!
(great really nice work!)
There's always the possibility of redesigning the building to suit the sign.....

Uhngi is her first name... and Arthur, my hat's off to you. I am not worthy!
Since I posted it this morning, I've got a go-ahead on a design. It's not as nice as Mr Vanson's, but it will do.

Cam, I think you should have a look at Mr Bortz's pub job before you say things like that. Cheers.

Well, let's see it!

With Mr. Vanson's Helvetica Layout, Brush Script Layout (All caps no less), and this beautiful ugly word, I have a new hero.

I'm with Joe..
( Does uhngi not sound like a transmitted lip fungus to anyone else?)

Well. its moot now but tried posting this earlier.

I missed all the fun! Oh well, here's my take on it. Cam, where's yours?

Arthurs design works for me, very nice job.

As always, enjoy seeing Arthurs work - nice & refreshing - Ron's version looks pretty hip also, though the grey drop shadows are kinda getting lost - have always liked turquoise -

Bro. Vanson,
I bow in the presence of your greatness. That lettering and layout kicks ass.
I wish money were not so tight, due to my heart attack and subsequent loss of my shop (a very sordid story), right because I would buy that script in a NY minute...
Your work is outstanding.

I also love Arthur's version....
BUT...
What I also admire is his presentation. He not only presented it as a possible logo but also as a possible business card, letterhead, envelope, invoice, etc. The complete package.
A nice way of presenting!!

Wow, now Arthur has the edge on the design. I like the flow and the long lines pull it together, like they would be poles for the salon. I like eccentric names sometimes, like in entertainment or the beauty or spa services. They are service oriented folks, kind of exotic.
