Just my guess as to how many posts we will have by Dec 31, 2005 at 11:59pm California time

Those aren't posts. They're hits. When you click on it link here, log on, or sneeze, that's a hit.

My mistake.

well, your guess looks like a pretty accurate mathmatical projection.
I'll go on record guessing 4,500,000 hits.
Theoretically (in my best "Newman" voice) ...on any given day, Letterville probably receives close to the mathmatical average number of hits ...But, on the week before holidays, we see a surge. On thanksgiving, we see another surge. And, if history is any guide, on December 23rd, festivus, the mother of all bullboard days, hits should swell enough to offset any seasonal decline & push the annual totals well ahead of mere mathmatical projections!

& 99% of em are posted by six people too.....

This has all the makings of a good contest.
The counter is reset at exactly 12 midnight every New Years. Last year the total was 4,261,279. For the last 10 years, we have seen the number of visits increase every year. That's what we like to see!
If you are one of the 6 people generating all this action, you need to get moving.
Here's the BB Stat page for Oct. and Nov. How many visitors will we have by Jan. 1? Take a guess! We'll get together a cool surprize package for the closest guess.
Post your guess in this thread. On Friday, we'll lock the post and check the figures New Years Eve.

OK...Steve said visitors, and the guesses were for hits.
4,795,032 hits

Let's just go by the counter at the bottom of this page.
The terms hits, unique visitors, visitors, page impressions, etc. etc. all mean different things to different people. According to our sources, it is impossible to accurately measure unique visitors. It has something to do with the way giant providers such as AOL share their servers and IPs. I'm a sign painter Jim! Not a network tech.
Here's the stats our server emails everyday. This one is for last week. If someone out there can actually read this, we'd love to know what it says.
Server Activity Totals for Period: Total sessions served : 35373 Total hits made on server : 1186446 Total page view hits : 232541 Total non page view hits : 953905 Total time spent by all sessions : 8896510 seconds Total bandwidth : 1570415.92 kilobytes
Session Averages for Period: Total sessions served : 35373 Average hits per session : 33.54 Average page views per session : 6.57 Average time spent per session : 252.28 seconds Average bandwidth usage per session : 44.40 kilobytes
Session Origins for Period: Total sessions served : 35373 Total search engine referred sessions :821 (92.32%) Total referred session : 7569 (21.40%) Total blind (no referrer) sessions : 26983 (76.28%)

How do you see how many hits on a post? Someone told me a while ago, just forgot.
Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :
yeah, Steve always calls them "visitors"
same question, different year:
quote:Originally posted by Steve Shortreed: These counters never give a truly accurate measurement of actual visitors. They just measure everytime the page is opened. That could be people returning again and again, or someone refreshing the page over and over. Refreshing the page is basicially reloading the page, so it counts it just like another visit.

4,438,792 ... and a half
Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
The confusing thing to me is that all the definitions of "hits" that can be found on the net define them as:
quote: The retrieval of any item, like a page or a graphic, from a Web server. For example, [i]when a visitor calls up a Web page with four graphics, that's five hits, one for the page and four for the graphics.[i] For this reason, hits often aren't a good indication of Web traffic.
So, apparently, opening a webpage that includes graphics counts numerous 'hits', not just one. Then, like Steve says, when you hit your refresh button or the back button, it should repeat an equal number of hits for that same page.
I had a counter on my page for awhile, which was the same one that Larry White uses. When I signed up for it, the form gave me a choice of hits or visits. I chose the visits option. Going there only caused the counter to go up by "one", no matter how many clicks during the visit.

That hits definition makes sense Don. According to the stats generated by our server, Letterville had 1,186,446 hits last week. I can't get in on the contest, but our goal is to top the 5 million "visitor" figure on the page counter.
An interesting side note that may be an indication of human behavior. The most visitors we've ever seen in a single day is 23,000. That's 3x the entire population of Fergus!
I'd like to say the attraction was an especially great step by step or similar helpful post, but in truth, it was one of our "family feuds." Seems we really do love a good car wreck.

Now lets see ... it takes an average 3 seconds to refresh this page. Therefore I can add 20 hits a minute = 1200 per hour = ....
Wait a minute!!!! The back & forward clicks are almost instantaneous and register a hit!
Make that 3,600/hour

Better than that, Jon. lol The page graphics count as hits when they load, too. You could swing 10,000 or more in an hour if you wanted.
