you got a good start.....and not bein a flipant question....but your work tends to have a "TAGGER" look to it....is that where you started drawing? and your how old? if you keep at it and get a little more "sign orinented" you gona do ok.....

Ralph, your carictures are really cute (but I'm confused-when did Daisy go bleached-blonde? )
I like your window work. Do you do all this with airbrush or spray cans?? It has a sorta loose-fun grafitti look to it, and I like the way you make everything 'glow' with hi-lights.
On the 2 cut-out signs that say 'Airgrfix'?? I think the letters would 'pop' more if they had a clean bold outline in a colour like white, yellow or lime green. I like airbrushed work, but sometimes, everything looks 'fuzzy'. This is where a good clean hand-brushed outline can really beef-up the program.
Anyway, very creative work.
Also, be practicin' with lettering brushes to expand your lettering skills to other letter forms and cleaner, more uniform types, which will open up a wider variety of work. Posted by Ralph Kelly (Member # 6087) on :

well i'm 38 and just started doing airbush and caricatures about 2 years ago..other than that its been a hobby
the daisy is jessica simpson from the dukes of hazard 2005
right now i use iwatas hpc's and all work is done with airbrush
i really need to work on brush lettering......useing a brush period..
whats the name of the lettering brushes...?

good lettering brushes are gettin hard to find. LANGNICKLES are my favorite....but hard to find. you need to find some QUILLS AND TRUCK FLATS...

Ralph, the caricatures look great. How long does it take to make one of these? You can find everything you need from the merchants here. Another tip would be to buy a few books on lettering, check out the "Letterville Book Shop" for ideas. There are some inexpensive alphabet books and of course "THE" book on layout (if you want to seriously get into signs) Mike Stevens'"Mastering Layout". Looks like you're having tons of fun, don't lose that!

I started out with an airbrush too....and you are gonna have to make the leap to incorporating more traditional methods to signmaking. Then use the airbrush to accent and enhance your conventional work, not the other way around.

Wow! Great characatures! If you were to incorporate the characatures of the business owner into his (or her) window splash, vehicle, sign, business cards, etc..... the possibilities are endless. I think that takes real talent; something the quickee stickees don't have. And as far as the lettering goes, ever consider using a plotter and paint mask?

rule number one in the sign business... dont invent fonts... use established letterforms..... you have flair... train it
