Well Today I was working outside the shop on a 8'x20' sign. I work out side quite a bit but today was different. I lettered up the sign with reflective lettering and decided to do all the shadows with paint instead of vinyl.
Usually if i hand paint I do it inside.. but do to the size of this beast I couldnt fit it indoors. Boy it was cool.. people stopping walking to watch me paint. Cars were slowing down all day to catch a glimpse.
Boy I gotta hand paint outside more often.. it felt good!!

LOL Kissy.
I soooo want to be back hand lettering. Thanks for the post, it brings me back.
It's been almost 8 years since the hand(s) went to the keyboard.
I did hand letter for 3 companies for at least 8 years, & 2 years of partying... I mean school in D.L. Minn. I hope its like riding a bike. I think letter spacing & construction will need to be re-taught by doing it. The 'tight' styles may need be re-learned also. I can still grab a brush & whip my script & Steven's casuals though.
Jason, I bet hand lettering is very cool to see, especially in the current computer age. Charge admission next time! (Admission may be a reality 20-30 years from now, who knows). Posted by Catharine C. Kennedy (Member # 4459) on :
Hey, Jason! Can you post a photo of the finished product? Good going! Cat

That's cool, Jason. It still amazes me when people come into the shop to talk about a sign project of some kind, and I mention hand painting something on it. "Wow. You can do that?" or "Man, I didn't know anybody could do that anymore." or (the one that really HITS) " I guess you old-timers are the only ones who can do that anymore." Nobody wants to learn anymore. I know vinyl is faster, but hand painting still gives me much more enjoyment, looking at the finished product.

When you're having fun, it just doesn't feel like work. Sounds like you were there Jason! Very cool.
I remember doing storefront installs a few years back. Always outdoors so a crowd always gravitated around to see what's up. It's a different world when you're hidden in a bay somewhere.

Neato-Squeato. I love adding a painted shadow or outline to dat demon vynull. Gives it that "special" look, and in my opinion, it's much faster and wayyy cheaper than using a plotter. Love....Jill

I'll post better pics of it when I hang it sometime this week.. The only reason its not all paint is because the customer wanted reflective .. so all the yellow is reflective..

I guess Im ignorant... what is bluestone?
Posted by Jason Davie (Member # 2172) on :
Mike: INFORMATION ABOUT BLUESTONE Geological: A metamorphic sandstone of the Appalachian Plateau. Formed in the Devonian Age, the Upper Devonian Stone is green and lilac while the Middle Devonian Stone is dark gray and blue.
The basic colors are shades of blue, green and lilac. Surface colors on natural surfaces are shades of brown, purple, and rust.
More Info on the Sign: I used 0.040 baked enamel coated alum.
When i wentto jills meet I learned the easy way to layout big signs. I went out and got a projector and made transparencys to get the layout.
Man that was alot easier than the way I used to layout bigger signs!!
Man I love Letterville and going to meets and learning new things that make things easier!!
Thanks, Jason D

nice work ! i must be honest and admit that i'm quite jealous of those of you who can paint, something i'd love to get more involved in as time goes by, can't say 'll ever make money from it, just to be able to do it to a reasonable standard would float my boat !

I don't understand why you would need a projector to layout a sign with vinyl lettering. Don't you have the layout done to scale on the computer?
BTW, if that's made with that 1" hollow square aluminum tubing on the back side as a framework, I hope that its going flat against a wall, or a good wind as apt to blow it apart.
Dan

the framework on the back was just to set it up at the shop. The sign is going right on the wall no framework.
I did have the layout done in the computer.. I projected it on the sign and scetched out the letter placement and shadow placement and didn't have to measure anything..

GET OUTTA TOWN!!!! Didn't you read the part in Mike Stevens "Mastering Layout" where you're not suppose to be that good until at least a few months, preferably years? You're a brush slinging monster! hehehe Keep up the good work.

Nice job Jason, Keep that brush in your hand. Cause ya can't clean yur ears with a keyboard.
