I do, however most of the suggestions to just go buy a Mac get ignored. $500 gets you a niiice stable system in a box the size of a small CD wallet and you can use your existing keyboard, monitor and mouse with it. Posted by Ray Rheaume (Member # 3794) on :
Dana,
Increasing the virtual memory of the system and rebooting might do the trick. Those files require sufficient memory or they will not load.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to reinstall Windows.
Hope this helps... Rapid

What version Windows? How much total ram?

Dana, Try this... 1. Start the PC in Safe Mode. 2. Click on Start and choose Run. Type in Sysedit and click on Ok. 3. Open c:\windows\system.ini window. 4. Click on Search, choose Find, type in VCACHE and click on Next. 5. Add the following line to the [VCACHE] section : MAXFILECACHE=6144. 6. Save the file and Restart the pc.
This has worked in the past for me, but it is mainly for Windows 95-98 operating systems. It was fixed in windows 98SE

Windows 98 and I have NO idea how much Ram. lol
I haven't added any programs, so memory isn't the problem. I picked up a bug somewhere that antivir didn't prevent, but did get rid of. That's the only thing I can think of.
I'd love to start it in safe mode, but it won't. I keep getting the same error message.
I can get it to the C: prompt, and that's about it.

Oh... just so you know...
I tried doing the cd\windows\system then ren iosubsys iosubold, but it says file not found.
So I did dir iosubsys, and it says volumn in drive c has no label blah blah blah.
more computer gobble-degook.

Type "mem" at the command prompt to see the largest executable program size.
Check your Bios (normally by pressing Esc or F1 during boot) and make sure the hard drive information is correct.

WINDOWS 98 HAS EXPIRED!!!!! hehehehehee dana when you get messages and it wont even boot its time to reinstall windows. now would be a good time to upgrade to XP, this will save your info on the hard drive. if you cant do this then you will have to get a new hard drive,(80 gig are goin for $60 now) put it in the place your old hard drive was conneted to. leave your old hard drive out while you install win98 on the new hard drive. after you do that then connect you old hard drive as a SLAVE and hook it to the 2nd slot on the same cable as your c:\ drive. this way you wonr lose any infor but should be able to access it fron explorer on your new c drive.

This might be worth a try? There was a System Restore in Windows 98
restart your computer to MS-DOS
then type on DOS, scanreg/restore
or scanreg/? for other options

Got home from work today, and Bruce managed somehow to get Windows to reinstall... woohoo!!
Still not it's normal self, but at least it's working.
I know I'm in the dark ages here, heck I don't even have a cell phone, but it's what I got to work with for now!
