Hiya 'heads, I did a search on this topic and couldn't find anything recent. So, I figured I'd bring it up again. Who did you use to register your domain name and why? Also, who do you use for hosting your website and why? Ideally, I would like host that would provide a multi-tier hosting plan that I could grow into. I would like to start small with a few pages and a simple gallery and eventually graduate into a full blown site with secure e-commerce. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Checkers

godaddy.com is inexpensive for domain registration & have been extremely accessible for sales/support questions(a night & day difference compared to Verizon)

I registered my domain with Network Solutions due to their established place in the domain world and solid customer service.
Should you misplace your domain credentials, the last thing you need is some firm with zero customer service.

Network Solutions has, IMHO, gotten quite greedy. They're up to $34.95 a year for domain renewals while pretty much everybody else is under $10 a year. I have 3 sites. The oldest is with Network Solutions and they will not allow me to transfer it to a different registrar.

Network Solutions has good customer service, but they are too pricey in my opinion. All of my new registrations have been going through 10-domains.com. I've heard good things about godaddy.com so I may give them a try.
ZoneEdit.com is supposed to be a good place for hosting DNS.
I have a friend that hosts most of my domains. However, I have a site running from home. It's on my Mac, and it was easy to configure. I like the flexibility of running it from home because I don't have to worry about space limits. The router needed a little tweaking to allow the world to see the Mac.

Stay away from Network Solutions. They used to be the ONLY game in town, and they still would like you to believe that. Way overpriced and too limiting.
I use a local "computer guru" host. He is set up through GoDaddy but he has also considered 1&1 as an alternate(that's 1and1.com).

I use Web.com for registering, edatarack.com for hosting - great plans, lots of useful tools- $2.95/month plus reseller plans.

I tried to transfer my first registration OUT of network solutions (registered back in their monopoly days) They coundn't legally NOT let me transfer... be I tried to get the ball rolling 6 weeks before my renewel was due... they basically dragged their feet the whole 6 weeks with blatant red tape until I had to re-up with them for another year just to keep my islandsign.com domain. yep, I think they are nothing but crooks!

I've registered 6 names using DotEarth.Com. They are reasonably priced and allow you to "free park" your name at no cost until you have your website done.

just be sure no matter what u select.. that .. they do not own the domain name after you register with them. That will turn into a nightmare if you ever need ot move your website. If you own it then they cannot stop you.
Many of those 10 bux a year domain registrars actually own your name if you use their services.
