How about an old guy that has devoted his life to perfecting the craft only to see everything turning into vinyl. Having been brought up in the Depression, waste is very revolting to me. We fill at least two large garbage bags with vinyl scraps daily. Just to keep my ability alive, I did a glass door with a very ornate gold leaf monogram, using 23kt, 18 kt and copper leaf. All the outlines were done by brush, no silk screen. A good feeling to still be able to do it at 77. When seeing what looks like it might be a hand lettered truck, and at close inspection find it is vinyl, a feeling of dissapointment comes over me.

I feel the same way Bill, though I am only 31! I like creating and seeing my finished product as I am doing it. With vinyl, most of the work is done with a computer/plotter... Anybody can do that. I work as a designer for a large highway signshop during the day and they pull 4-6 cans of trash/scraps out of the shop a day! Insane! In the PM I do all my stuff the old fashioned way, thanks to you showing me how a few years ago at AJ's Nothin's Happenin' and being inspired by guys such as Glen Weisgerber, you, and AJ... I can work on a hand-done project for a week and have enough trash to fill maybe a sandwich bag. There is nothing like the amazement of people who say, "You did that by hand?!" I get a thrill out of that. Mike, I think I will whip something up and send it your way. If you send one back, can I request some Goldleaf on there?
Keep it wet!

I'll swap a panel with you Mike . . . .eventually . . . lol.
Kind'a busy right now, but 'freestyle' and 'themeless' sounds fun.
Also, you can join Jame's Donahue's PANEL SWAP number 5. Will add link shortly.

Mike was sayin' he's sick of vinyl and wants to re-appreciate hand-paintin' & stripin'.

What a novel idea - paint a sign. I'm in...as long as we can wait til' the summer rush has died down a bit.

I love swapping panels. I'm not good at handlettering or striping, but I would never do one with vinyl on it. I might use it for a paint mask to help out, but never apply it to a panel for good. I would at least try to paint it if someone is gracious enough to want to swap.

I agree, Don, same with me (by the way, it was really great to meet you at Jill's!).
Did you try your hand at it at the meet? I am not real good, but I can see that I CAN do it, I just need to keep at it!
Will any of you who are more experienced at it, mind swapping with newbie-striper-letterers like us?
I practiced with Bill Diaz Saturday night, then simply copied a simple design from mark Sunday morning & passed it around, & lo & behold, I have MY work on a panel with Sal's, Bill's, Danz's, Mark's & Rapid's!!!!!!! And you know what? Mine wasn't too bad!!!
The encouragement we give each other is PRICELESSS!!!!!! Let's do it!

May I make a suggestion? In a place next to all the others you have. It's done as a gift, no less than any other.

You would have to totally count me out, as I don't have the brush skills with lettering, godforbid striping, to take part in anything like this.
I would feel horrible, thinking the recipient of my panel would look at the not up to par lettering skills, then have to toss it out for firewood... then feel cheated they didn't get anything back as good as they sent off.
Kinda a quandry for me... if I painted it, it would look bad, but if I did vinyl it would look good, but it would be vinyl so it would be bad, though painted lettering would be good even though mine is bad, but... oh my brain hurts...
Kinda like the first panel swap when I got Terry Colley's name. I was INCREDIBLY intimidated by that!! I mean, there was NO way in h-e-double-hockey-sticks that I was going to paint something for him... he is WAY outta my league.
I finally sent him a panel... all vinyl (including shade-shifter and SignGold) with a hammered metal spray painted background, and a cut-out Border Collie dog. I really liked the way it turned out, but was still worried about sending it. He said it was ok, sure hope he wasn't just being nice...
Seriously though, you are obviously wanting to trade with people with great lettering skills, which would truthfully leave me out anyways. That's what I have Bruce around for...

Like I posted on the "other" thread, maybe you guys that HATE vinyl and think it's ALL bad, should put your name on a anti-vinyl list for upcoming panel swaps.
No, seriously. I'm just thinking if some people are really that anti-vinyl, this might be a legitimate thing to do.
That way, if people like me get your name, I can respectfully ask for someone else's, since you won't like or want my panel anyways.
Then you won't get something you don't want, and I won't be any more paranoid than I already am about the recipient being disappointed.
This way it doesn't keep anyone doing whatever techiques they are comfortable with, from participating in panel swaps.
It just sometimes doesn't occur to me, about some people thinking totally different than I do. I just never realized that some people are so against vinyl, even if on a gift.

Were I to receive a gift panel that was richly designed and thoughtfully executed, I would proudly display it, regardless of the medium.
