Hi Heads!
As you know, Stevo Chartrand and I are putting on a panel jam in the piney woods of Pennsylvania.
We already have several folks promised...some even signed up!
 -
Yins can camp out onsite...plenty of room for RVs!
 -
But watch out, they might get pinstriped!
 -
For the not-so-oudoorsy types there are 2 motels:
The Emlenton Motor Inn (8 miles): 724-867-2314 (under $30)
Super 8 in Barkleyville (15 miles): 814-786-8375 (under $50)
 -
And you can be sure that my sisters June and June will feed yins real good!
 -
Stevo has brewed up a fresh batch of hootch (lemonade for the teetotallers)
 -
And we can picnic, party, and paint for three whole days!
 -
More info is on the future meets page , or click here for a flyer and a downloadable registration form.
Jill's Jamboree! AUGUST 19-21, 2005!
Slingin' Paint with the Skeeters!
Hope to see you this summer!
Love....Jill

Why Harris, that is our own Rick Beiseigel.
 -
He has his own club, including Roger & Kevin Dinofola and a few other spry chums.
 -
They will be pedalling to the Jamboree to watch the corel demo by Stevo and Dave "Tater Tot" Grundy.
 -
Of course, if they happen to lose their way, we have the Boy Scouts as a search party!
 -
Hopefully they'll get here in time for the watermelon seed spitting contest.
 -
Be sure to save room for corn on the cob! We have plenty of dental floss.
 -
And be careful where you skinny dip, Harris. We have a few crayfish in the Allegheny!

It'll be like goin' back in time. I haven't been to PA since the '80's. I still have buds in the State College area, including my first business partner who bought me out of our painting business. We were long hair hippies in the day livin' life day by day. I helped my business partner establish his very first checking account. Up until then, he kept all his cash in the glove box of his VW. When I spotted a C note hanging out of that compartment, I ran him right down to the bank and got him started.

Is that a fishin' whole I spotted in one of those pics, Jill?

Jane and I will probably head in the Centre County direction after the meet. I owe those folks a visit. They've been out to see me a few times more than I've been out to see them, so I'm due.

Things are starting to fall into place (or rather I'm pushing them!) and this is looking like a fun time. Last night I had my first dream about it. By the time the Mars meet happened I was down to about two hours of sleep per night. My head gets too full of plans to sleep.

I will be traveling with my 14 yr. old (Nick)
Don't know if I can fit a bike.

Have had room reserved for a while but may (probably not)(might)(I don't know) tent it now that the wife and daughter aren't coming along.

Glad you like the bottle, I've been having fun with them ... (thanks for the toys)
but ...
engine turning on a small cylinder ... not so fun after a while (hehe)
and
what the heck do they print those bottles with???
I tried getting the print off with Lacquer thinner, acetone, xylene ... ended up figuring a way to hook it to my drill and sand the printing off.

I dunno how they do it, Mark. I even looked here
We have more registrations coming in!
Mark Matyjakowski & Nick
Steve Racz
Last night we took advantage of a huge 4th of July sale at Shop'n'Save. Bought 17 cases of pop for starters, including Kissy's Mountain Dew and Dana's diet vanilla cherry Dr. Pepper. They have all been stashed at Nanny's to keep them safe from the kids.
Our July 4th will be a work day up at the camp. John Pat will be having his semi-annual bluegrass festival there in two weeks. Hopefully I'll be able to get some pictures.
After we get back from Mazeppa the real fun starts! Menus! Baking! Freezing! Prepping panels! Hauling easels! Shopping! Paperwork! Organizing supplies! But I am so excited and I know Stevo is too. Can't wait to actually enjoy my own meet with yins.
All these kids who are coming will have a blast.
Love....Jill [Smile]
PS
Gene, shall I prepare pugly tempura? I know it's yer fave.

I'll have to remember how to drive in hilly country again. Cause I know Jane won't be any help. She'll have one hand on my wrist and the other on the dash as if it will help.

When I first moved out there before I was in my 20's and had more balls. But I remember I "was" the SLOWEST driver on the roads. Going downhill with those semi's chasing me put the fear of God into this flatlander.

I'll be ready to drink a few beers upon arrival if that's permissable.

Posted by Jill Marie Welsh (Member # 1912) on :

You'll do just fine, Bill.
I drive slow on hills & bends too.
Hey here is a link for churches in the area if anyone needs it. Just trying to cover everything.
I won't put a link to the gentleman's club, tattoo parlor, or bar tho!
[Thanks]

Hey Steve,
I'm reading that Jill is telling you to put up the links to the places of ill-repute [Smile]

A big ol' box of Ronan paint awaited us upon our return, as well as some more registrations.
And a phone call from Magoo!
(I won't tell him about the freshwater mussels in the river)
It's gonna be fun!
The chap with the mohawk is my 9-yr-old, Justis.

Now for a QUESTION...

What is expected at a meet?
In other words, what might we expect to be doing, signwise?

Do we bring our own panels?
Are we working on a group project?
Do we need to have some prep work done before we leave for the meet?

I looked at the Mazeppa photos and tried to figure it out.
Jill's will be my first meet. I don't want to show up in jeans and everyone else is in tuxes, if you catch my drift.

Posted by Stevo Chartrand (Member # 2094) on :

Ok, here is a bit of Newbie Info.
I dunno how most meets are run, but this is how I do it:
Yes there will be various panels from aluminum to slate. I have saved remnants from all my cut stuff and we are also attempting to cut & paint a few custom shapes.
I won't have the most paint ever, but there will be plenty to go around. 1-Shot and Ronan have donated about 40 half-pints, and I'm gonna skim and strain my own paint too. Plus stir sticks, cups, thinner to clean yer brushes and oil to dunk em in. And plenty of paper towels. There will be easels to lean your stuff against and also chairs to sit on in case yer a flat-painter like myself.
The panel jam area itself is in a covered pavilion, but we may extend it to a huge tented area too. There is electricity and running water. I have no compressors, but hopefully some kind soul will bring one in case anyone wants to airbrush.
You are always welcome to make a panel in advance to display and keep or to give away. We may paint the back of the stage (dry brush effect with fitches) but we might not! Usually at a meet, you think something up and paint it out to give to a pal or to trade. I'll set up a display area for this.
Bring plenty of business cards!
Wear old clothes, it's not a fashion show and we are camping in the wilderness. Be sure to pack a rain poncho and a sweatshirt.
We have some tasty door prizes too!
It's gonna be fun.
Love.....Jill

Jill,
Is there still room to camp out? Or still rooms left that u know of? If I can get a reliable person to watch my new pup I probably can come.
Thanks,
Camille

Posted by Jill Marie Welsh (Member # 1912) on :

There is plenty of room to camp onsite, be it in a tent or motorhome. The bunkhouse, alas, is full up. Call one of the 3 motels listed on page 1 of this thread to see if there are rooms available. I'm sure that there are.
My uncle said that the most they ever had at this camp was 300 people. Our family reunion is held here every year with at least 200, so I am confident that everyone will be able to squeeze in somewhere. He is hosting his semi-annual bluegrass festival this coming weekend if anyone would like to go in for a sneak peek. It's free to the public.

John Smith,
How does a roll of Taylor Ham sound? (kind of like Pork Roll?) If I bring it will you cook it up? That along with eggs, cheese, ketchup, salt and pepper makes a great greasy sandwich. (especially good on a toasted onion roll)

In case nobody noticed on the first page, the nearest airport is Pittsburgh International (PIT)

Here is our rough directions from Airport translation: (1 hour 45 minutes)

Exit Airport onto RT 60 South, head toward Pittsburgh. Exit at 1B-Crafton,
follow Steubenville Pike, RT 60 to I-79 North to I-80 East...
Get on 1-80 East towards Mercer.
Take Exit 42 (PA 38) to Emlenton.
Follow Flyer directions and watch for signs...there will be plenty!

I'm glad to see Steve Racz is going to be there, because I owe him a panel. I made him a panel for one of the panel exchanges. The panel depicting Pat King working on a brick wall. When Pat died he sent the panel to Bobbie King. It was a noble gesture on his part, and he should be rewarded. He also should not have to go without a panel, so I'm anxious to make one for you, Steve.

I apologize for not making you one sooner, but I've been too busy to fart.

I think we've got the makings of a good meet, with good folks, a good location and I hope the weather is great. Small meets under 100 people are the best, in my opinion, because you have a better chance of getting to know people better.

Here is what the inside of the bunkhouse looks like, for you brave souls who will be bunking there:
 -
Remember to bring your sleeping bags! It's a tight squeeze, but snug as a bug in a rug.
And here is the nice swing on the screened-in bunkhouse porch:
 -
We took up easels and tables and schtuff today and things are really shaping up.

Just to let Pittsburgh folks know who may be traveling up Route 8, there is a detour thru Lyndora to Route 38 due to the closing of the Main Street Viaduct.
And..when you get on 38, it is also the week of the North Washington Rodeo, so expect a few delays. A good alternate would be Route 308 out of Butler to Clintonville, right onto to 208 to Lisbon and then left at the light. (look for signs)

Ok, being from Latrobe and a die-hard Rolling Rock drinker I was going to bring a 1/4 barrel with me for the evenings at the bonfire.
So I wanted to find out is there enough beer drinkers to have such an Item and the other thing is after looking into it.... Well Rolling Rock don't sell a 1/4 barrel so I have to get a half barrel...
We have a few days can we drink one or should I just get a few cases?
Hey Jill, Steveo. Any advise?

Al, it is up to you.
Just don't do any keg stands, OK Buddy?
We will have ice and there is a beer distributor in nearby Emlenton....but if you wanna bring The Rock, maybe we can pass a hat to make it easier for you.
I know a half-barrel can't be cheap...

DON!!!!!!!!!!! I had NO idea you were coming!!!! That's SENSATIONAL!

We're driving over from Ohio on Friday morning. Let me look at our path and see if it takes us near the airport - I have a feeling the freeway goes much north but I will check.

[Frown] Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be going anywhere close to the airport. Sorry 'bout that, we would have been happy to scoop you up on the way.

Posted by Bill Diaz (Member # 2549) on :

Al, I'm definately a beer drinker. If you think we can keep a keg from going flat, let's have at it, my experiences with kegs has always been -- drink 'em the night of cause they'll go flat. If there's just a handle full of us we'll be pretty sloshy trying to kill a half before it goes flat. A quarter might be better or try to figure out a way to get CO2 attached to the keg. Otherwise just get day by day supplies.

I was wondering about beer and such in Pa, because when I lived there, you could only get beer at bottle-shops or beer distributors. Is it still that way?

I like Bill's attitude -- do we have to paint signs? A nap or 2 sounds terrific. I'll do some panels for sure, but I plan to visit and do as much lying as possible, maybe do some jammin' if others are interested. I'm not going to be zinging around all over the place like a chicken with my head cut off, because I'm way over-worked lately. My woman has me booked solid. Secretly she's trying to keep me busy, so I won't find ways to get into trouble.

I might bring some HOK for folks to fool around with if anybody's interested. What about fishin? We could choose up teams and smell armpits or do some "Kumbayahin'" down at the fire pit. Hunt for frogs, roast a weinie or 2, zilch, play "Capture the flag" -- man there's all kinds of stuff you can do out in the woods.

Don! If you can't fit into the bunkhouse, will ya settle for a couch? No matter what, I know there are no beds up there long enough! It will be way cool to meet you.
Like Jane sez, folks, please bring guitars if ya got em, or a fiddle, or a harmonica or something!
I have to pick up Catherine from Scotland at Pittsburgh International next Tuesday, and Alan Ackerson is gonna sleep on our couch here on Wednesday. I think we'll be up at camp by about 10 am.
Meant to mention this earlier, just in case, the nearest hospital is in Clarion, PA.
Love....Jill
PS
I have been getting a lot of calls asking if there is a special one-day rate...there isn't. It will be $50 a person for the meet. If you register before the 15th, spouses are $35. Kinda makes me feel like when someone calls me about the price of magnetic signs... [Smile] This will cover the food and the camp rental. I want everyone to have a fun, satisfying time....including myself and Stevo! I am glad that the registration has been steady (53 so far now) because the cash flow has enabled me to buy a lot of food!

Don,
Reminds me of Bill Clinton getting off of Air Force one.
Under each arm he was carrying animals.
A Marine remarked to him, "Nice pigs, sir!"
Clinton says, "These aren't pigs, they're authentic Arkansas Razorbacks. I got one for Hillary and one for Chelsea."
The Marine looked them over a little and replied, "Nice trade Sir!"

Hey Jill and Stevo, how about electrified instruments like a small amp and guitar? I don't know if my acoustic is worthy. I may bring it anyway if there is no plug ins or folks are into folksy campfire type music. I could probably wing it though just to back up my "Hurt Me" boy Ackerson and his new harp.

I can jam along with anybody on all 3 or 4 chord songs (blues, country or rock) and as long as I don't have to play lead or sing. My gravel voice would scare off the wolves.

Yeah Don, if those wolves get near our women, we will retaliate. Dark forests at night conjure up images of Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstilskin, little Red Riding Hood and Bill and Don goin' bezerk chasing wolves through the woods with hand grenades.

Thar's Barrs in them thar woods, not wolves!
Here is the main road in to camp, there is an alternate route as this is rather ruff:
 -
It leads to my uncle's camp:
 -
This is where the meals will be served:
 -
And here too (bunkhouse in background)
 -
Here is one of the two showers on site:
 -
Here's where we plan to jam:
 -
The road to the river, deep in the woods:
 -
And a spring in case anyone gets thirsty on the 1-mile hike down to the rocky beach:
 -
Music will be good, amplified or not, as we can holler in the holler and nobody will give a hoot!

Dave, it will nice to meet you too! I am really getting excited!!!! Actually, I never did pick up the "yins" thing, it was always "you guys".

And my Nemesis, too!!!... Don, I am so glad you are coming up too!

This will be so much fun, but I am SO nervous about meeting all of you! I think most of you know each other, & not only that, I am 44, but haven't been hand painting for long, so I think I will be out asking for help, if that is ok. Maybe I will be a pro when I head back home!

Jill, my parent's house is about 1/2 hour away & they see bears pretty often. Think maybe we might see one? I lived above Kennerdell, in Coal City for a year when my boys were little, & I used to smear bacon grease on the big rock behind the house for the bears to come & I never saw one. The grease was always gone the next morning, tho!

Speaking of bacon, I was thinking of bringing up a big slab of it. Anyone like slab bacon?? It still has the "ninnies" on it!

We're still hopin' for a ride from the airport Friday morning if we can hook up with somebody. Bob Rochon has offered to come get us if we can't find another way, but last night I found out that would mean a four hour round trip for him.

Surely, Catalin and I can't be the only ones coming into that airport on Friday? No meet airport shuttles?

Hello Letterheads,

I've only been to one meet and that was Joe Cieslowski's, which was focused on carving so this is my first panel jam.

Do people bring designs or pounce patterns with them for their panels?

I'm so slow at design i'll never get done a panel in a weekend.

Mostly i want to learn how to letter. All of my lettering has been fill in stuff.

Don Coplen, lets git together an scare as many people as we can. Only kids I don't scare are my own, damn!
Bill D & Al, I don't git drunk any more...
My son is bringin his geetar, was gonna bring a little amp, we'll bring the biggin (not very big) if we got room in the truck.
My borrowed pop-up camper got sold, we'll be in a tent lookin for a flat spot.

Whew!
Spent the day setting up with the help of Stevo and Mark Neurohr.
We have easels and tables and paint and panels...now all we need are a few Letterheads!
We placed directional signs on I-80 both at the 2-mile indicator and the exit 42 both ways.
Also on Routes 38 & 208 and Lisbon Rd.
(Got yelled at by a car salesman)
Hopefully the signs will all still be up!
They are black or purple with white lettering and the shaky Letterheads logo.
My uncle now wants us to use the alternate entrance (very rough road, OK for 4x4s tho)
We are really stoked.
Love....Jill

I've been peekin' in on this post fer laughs the last week or so... wished I could go, but I got an anniversary to celebrate next week... but the wife's being annoying this weekend, so I just made a reservation to fly in to PA on my anniversary [Smile]
..just for spite! (remember that Seinfeld episode? ...really pumped new life into the word "spite" for me)

...oh well, I guess I'll wake up tomorrow & let my flight reservation expire while I resign myself to tolerating her share of annoyances in exchange for her pretending to accept mine... hmmmm "you get what you settle for" [Smile]

well at least for the next 23 hours I can pretend I'm coming out there to hang wit all you fine folks!! play music, drink rollingrock, try my hand at a little pre-novice brushwork & enjoy some piney woods [Smile] I was shocked to see that a full 13 folks on the list are now previous aquaintances from my trip to AC last year, and there are at least that many more who I feel like I already know from here.

Well, it's far from the first meet that I really really wish I could go to... but I think it is the first that I'm actually pretending that I am going to! Hey, I may be psychotic at times... but I know how to use that to maintain my sanity [Smile]

Hi everybody!

Yesterday I got a "Sneak Peak at the Meet"!!
I think everybody's gonna have a really, really good time! Jill and Stevo have put a lot of time, effort, and CREATIVITY into all of this!!

I what to personally thank the both of you for what I know will be a lot of fun, panel jamming, telling stories, LEARNING, TEACHING and generally, just making fun of each other!

The camp is what I'd have to call a perfect Letterhead Meet setting.

Looking foreward to rekin my frendships with all of my prior Buddies, meeting all of the rest of you and welcoming any new Letterheads!

See ya soon!

Okay, let's try this again...I just typed this whole long post and it disappeared into cyber-space!

I've adjusted the Countdown Clock for Eastern Time so here's the new, revised time...

BTW,
You're going to have to drag Steveo over here after your meet.

Gene, you are about 3 hours from me (if I drive fast) and the camp is 45 minutes from me...so...are you taking the Turnpike?

It may be easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. If she loves you she'll stay.

I'll be happy to bring my large one but I only have connections to run one air brush at a time unless some can throw there's in the car and bring it. I never needed any kind of "y" connectors in the past so I don't have any but I'm sure if we had the hook up we could run a ton off of mine. I roll it into the trailer and bring it. [Cool]

Jill, the package I mailed to you will be at your place Tuesday (tomorrow), by 3:00.

Thanks again.

I'd pick up a Y connector, but it would probably raise some eyebrows goin through the xray machine. LOL

I can bring a splitter and regulator valve.
It will be set up with a quick snap adapter. (1/4", I think)

Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :

We will need a video camera, microphone and use of a laptop, if possible.

If we can get a long enough telephone cable to reach, I'll help set up a video/audio "head tv" type of thing from my website.

The setup I have on my site allows for at least four or five video/audio links at once (so, the people at the meet can theoretically see the visitors as well as them seeing us...AND with SOUND!), and unlimited connections for people wanting to join in and watch/listen. It requires no special registering or setup for people to join in. Just type your name and hit the button, and you're in.

I've tested it with four 'heads video/audio at the same time. It worked great. Very sharp video.

We are heading out tomorrow morning between 2 & 3 am. I like getting some miles under my belt before breakfast. Going to try to get around the armpit of the nation which is the bottle neck traffic just south of Lake Michigan on I80.

We'll be heading straight to State College, Pa to get together with old friends and then head to the motel Thursday night.

Any suggestions on a route from State College to the meet, and how much time should you figure for that trip, and I will double it, because of the fact that I'm going to be one of the slower drivers out there.

Thanks in advance and we'll see you in a few days.

well, I let the booking expire like I knew I would... I'd love to sneak in & join the fun, but not at that price. The concept of "letterWeds" like Bruce & Dana is such a romantic twist on an already good thing, but I'd hate to be the first "LetterFled" to bail out on one good thing just for a short time at another. I needed a day of imagining it though [Smile] I used to be such a spontaneous party driven travelaholic that those old wings were starting to sprout the more I looked in on this post.

When Linda's ready to join me I'll see y'all at a meet down the road a ways. I can honestly say I wish I were gonna be there though!

I just spoke (and saw) Dave Grundy on my video chatroom. He's setting it up on his website and bringing the webcam/mic to the meet...so, anybody not coming will be able to peek in on us at Jill's this weekend!

Cool!

PS. If you're not coming and you have a webcam OR a mic, the chatroom has spaces for more than one webcam/audio connection. It will be neat for people coming to "visit" the meet to pop in and out with video and audio during the weekend.

If you don't have a cam or mic, there's a regular typed window as part of the interface, so you'll still be able to participate.

See ya all first thing Friday morning (Amy 's working till 11:00 Thursday night).

I just checked the weather for this weekend in Emlenton, right near Eau Claire. Around 60 degrees at night, 81 Friday, & upper 70's Saturday & Sunday. Only a 30 & 40% chance of thunderstorms. Lately when they say that, we don't gett'um, it is hit & miss, or they just don't come.

Look'in good!

Is it too early to buy a snowmobile outfit up there? And do they make them my size? I know I'm gonna need fur earmuffs and insulated gloves.

If it snows, will anybody be bringing sleds?

I've had one reserved at that Elmenton motor place since like April.
Now that it's just gonna be me an the boy ... and the weather looks good we are planning on tenting ... got the air mattress patched and ready to go (I hope)
I don't wanna just cancel it if someone needs it.

Now I just gotta get through the next couple of days ... work has been heavy stress trying to get my *&^% done to go (taking next week off too)
but come Thursday evening I don't want to even think about signs ... got "signs" to play with

FYI there is some construction at the airport, for departures, there is a ramp detour on Route 60. Just follow the signs and you'll be fine, but allow for extra time on your way home.

See yins tomorrow!

Click on this link for directions from the airport to I-79 North.

This behemouth thread has all the details you'll need, from hotel accomodations to sites for shopping. Just go back to page 1 and see, there are links everywhere.

I do have a cell phone in case of emergency, but I don't feel like posting the number on the net! The actual phone number at the camp is 814-385-6271. But ONLY call it if you have an emergency because my uncle might get mad at me if the phone rings all day for the next 4 days!

PM me if you want my cell #, it is a Verizon and I do have that In-Network plan. But cells only work in certain spots up in the hills.

OK, I don't have a room not being used ... one of you'z already using it.

When I made the reservations months ago (I was the 2nd one reserved) the guy that wrote the reservation f'd up.
I specifically asked the guy if they wanted a CC# (because I thought it was weird he didn't ask and I had in hand waiting) he said "no, don't need it, once I write it in the book your all good".

Today the lady tells me they didn't hold the reservations because I didn't call back with a CC# (like reservations are a multi step process).
She said the guy who screwed up the reservations "must have been the boss' brother" (I'm guessing the guys not the sharpest knife in the drawer)

Now, if I would have showed up Friday with my wife, as originally planned, carrying luggage ... that woulda sucked, more than a little.

The food is all bought, we just have to load up the trucks in the morning.
Brian, I put links for shopping and such early on in this thread, there are outlets at Grove City and also a nifty village called Volant.
Just scroll back...
Gonna check my email and go to bed as soon as Alan gets here! Not with Alan tho.

Alan got in around 12:30 am, safe & sound.
Just so that there is no confusion, as mentioned earlier, there are directions both on the future meets page in Letterville as well as on the very first page of this thread.
It's pretty much I-80 to exit 42, Emlenton, ¼ mile of Route 38, turn left onto Route 208, turn right at first traffic light in the village of Lisbon, and look for signs. There's plenty of 'em.
See yins soon.

I just finished the "Fair Sign From Hell". I am totally relieved. Hopefully, the next fair one I am doing right now will be easier than the log I letetred in vinyl. She did not put enough varnish on it to paint it, & it is very wavy, & my brush abilities are limited. Not only that, but she had me change the letters already, & the whole face of it!

We're hitting the road at 4:30 this afternoon. Hope to be at the Emlenton Hilton by 9 or 10 tonight. If we're not too tired we might check out what's happening at the camp after we get checked in.
