The brotherhood of Mac owners, that is. [Smile]

I placed the order this morning, it should ship out today and arrive later this week.

can't wait to get in there and mess around with Tiger!

I already have the first big task planned - gonna burn a handful of dual layer DVDs so I can clear the photos off this laptop hard drive!

Then I gotta create a new work area, maybe something a bit futuristic looking.. maybe some plasma cut and welded steel.

I went with the iMac where the whole system is contained within the LCD panel, I could definitely make an interesting workspace to fit around it.

I started with a Mac+ from the 80's and just recenlty bought 2 peecee's because I have to to run my CNC and to play online gaming. But they don't compare to graphics and audio like my mac, I'm getting ready to upgrade from my G4 to the new G5. Just make sure you get !life, I've made so many home videos with it.

Dan: As creative as you are, you just need to sit in front of a mac and just see how unrestrictive this OS is to your inspiration.
Si: You forget, it's the pee cees that need the constant excorcism
of spyware, viruses, and on and on.....
Curtis: proper ware is a black t shirt and jeans. It's you guys who are tithing with all your virus updates.
Rick: Well, what can I say.... [Wink]

Dark Side, haven't you noticed that it's the good guys in the movies who are using the Macs? Ever notice how many powerbooks are showing up with junny patches over the apple logo? They use a chunk of duct tape on Home Makeover and a red ball on Alias which makes them look like a Japanese flag.

I HAVE noticed how many Macs are in the movies lately. It's called marketing. [Rolling On The Floor]

Hey it's not like I'm seeking enlightenment going with a Mac, in fact I think one already has to be enlightened somewhat to go through the change. [Smile]

I think I will start wearing all black, get myself a black beret, grow a goate' and get some black thick-rimmed glasses to complete the uniform.

I will bring my own shop vac thank you very much, at least I know where it's been!

Funny I used to be a mac guy, and when I switched to PC because of the price of macs my brother said that I had gone to the dark side!! After a few years of using a PC now I dont think I would buy a Mac becuase of the price of them. But I do admit that they are far superior over any PC, I just cant justify the price for what I would use it for.

Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

It's funny you mention price.

I just went to Dell's website and configured a Dimension 4700 system - 3.4GHz Pentium 4 (according to benchmark tests the 2.0GHz G5 is 37% faster than this processor), 512MB 400MHz DDR-RAM, 160GB SATA hard drive.. and after I upgraded the base system to include the same things the Mac I just ordered has already built-in, like a higher quality 17in LCD display, DVD-RW+CD-RW SuperDrive that can write dual layer 8.5GB DVDs, the enhanced software for writing CD's and DVD's (to match iLife), 128MB video card, FireWire and a decent sound card..

The price difference is $33...

The pricepoint of PC's vs Macs just isn't there anymore!

let youze macers never forget...if it werent for bill gates(pc god) DUMPING A TON OF MONEY into a belly up company.....you wouldnt even be havin this post.....and the only reason he did this was to save himself from facing MONOPOLY charges from the govt...not because macs are so much better. because if MACS DIDNT EXIST....HE WOULD BE THE ONLY ONE.......now lets put the mac/pc thing in proper perspective.
most of MACS money for R/D CAME FROM THE PC GOD!!!! praise your god....hehehehehe

"....HE WOULD BE THE ONLY ONE....."
Now that would be a SCARY thought!
I admit, the Mac platform wasn't looking good at all before Mr. Gates dumped the cash but Mr. Jobs returned and that's oooold history Joe.

We're gaining market percentage, stock has erupted and split and they build better hardware than everyone but you. [Wink]
I guess Bill did OK in his investment didn't he?

And the price difference is history also. Sure you can bua a piece of crap off brand pc at Best Buy but when your comparing equivelent systems from quality mfs, it's just not there anymore. (unless you build them like Joe).

Has anyone actually seen the new OS? From most of the comments I don't think so. It's so good that Micro crap is accusing apple of stealing features from Longhorn. That's a good one. Apple's techies are looking at a Windoz OS that's a year or more out and incorporating parts of it in an existing solid OS today! They are more amazing than even I thought. [Razz]

Posted by Rick Beisiegel (Member # 3723) on :

Bill

I have never disrespected the OS for Mac. Seems to be very fluid. When XP was developed, they were striving for MAC like performance, so, it's no secret that Windows watches MAC when modifying and ultimatly improving their product. Heck, the auto makers all do the same thing. I just enjoy bustin on the cult that is Mac. [Wink]

Kinda like the guys that drove Gremlins in high school, and tried to convince us Chevy drivers that AMC was the up and coming muscle car of the 70's [Rolling On The Floor]

Price is no longer an issue cause when their marketshare dwindled to 1.5% in 2001, someone woke the CEO and said "were in trouble" Now, price is no issue...it is strictly preferance at this point. I may have been tempted to try a Mac were I not so knee deep in Dells! At this point software conversion is a bigger issue. I'd have to duplicate about $7500 worth of software.

[Cool]

so hes only got a 94-95% of the market...and no matter how you see it...as long as bill makes money with PC's he can afford to keep MAC afloat......bottom line is law and dollars....mac lives, bill dont face monopoly charges..so mac has a whole 5% of the market...so what the 95% is makin all the money...macs are sorta like a "lost leader" item....theY exist because bill gates needs them AND THE COMPANY SERVES HIS PURPOSE...so you got PC's TO THANK for your macs......heheheheheh

I recently purchased my very first computer and as a complete luddite bowed to the Mac Gods and bought the iMac G5. I think I did the right thing and my 12 year old tells me not to worry, she'll help me learn to use it.
Any advice out there on what program might be the right choice for a die hard hand-letterer to do layout and design.

sorry gavin..but it aint a conspiracy.....its fact. do you remember when gates was called to hearing on his monoploy of the computer world? right about the same time he dump a few mill into apple, put jobs back in charge(remember him and jobs started out together) and since then the hearings have went away......old story is if you got have a competitor...KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOIN....

Carol,
Stick with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. You can't go wrong there. If your getting a vinyl cutter, Graphtec has their own driver which is an Illustrator plug in and works very will.
I can't speak for other plotters though, they may have their own drivers.

Than there are full sign apps like Flexi. I don't consider them necessary and they are expensive. Just my opinion there.

..and Joe....you are one amazing dude.

If it weren't for Xerox and Apple, Gates never would have seen the Mac GUI. Gates started Windows with the sole intention of pilfering all the ideas from the Mac including the interface.

Unfortunately he hasn't been able to replicate the performance and stability of MacOS, and now that OSX is built on top of UNIX, Windows will never touch it.

Of course, without Gates and Windows, the IT guys would have even fewer job opportunities in their rapidly declining field. [Smile]

MacOS may only have 3.7% of the total US marketshare, but they've improved by 16% this year compared to last year. That's phenominal. Computer sales worldwide totaled 46.1 million units, that's all the manufacturers combined. Apple sold 1.07 million of those units.

The Mac mini's are selling out everywhere, and the iPod has increased Apple's brand recognition dramatically which just might sway more computer buyers.

Just think if Apple released a version of Tiger for PC. [Smile]

Posted by Julio Tome (Member # 4701) on :

What I ment by price was that I dont have a need for a mac for what I use a computer for, I know you can buy a comparable PC for around the same price but then I think you would be nuts to pay that type of coin for a PC over a Mac. I like to wait a year or so for computers and get the last years model for cheap. So what I meant by price in my case is I wouldnt spend $2200 cdn for an imac when a new Last years specs Dell that will suit me fine costs $600. But that doesnt mean I dont wish I had a mac in front of me right now. because I would prefer one.

Apple *does* have "last year's model" Mac available, it's the Mac Mini with a 1.2GHz G4 (I think) and it's only $500 - you supply keyboard, monitor and mouse and you're good to go. [Smile]

Argf FedEx sucks. [Smile]

They didn't pick up the machine from Apple til Midnight on the 9th, and according to the latest scan information on FedEx's website, it's still sitting in their facility in Sacramento, with a delivery date of tomorrow (thursday).

Hmmmm. If FedEx thinks they can get it here in less than 24 hours, why isn't it here *already*? [Big Grin] I know I know, I didn't pay their "rush fee" to get it here sooner - another lesson for sign shops that don't charge rush fees! [Smile]

Posted by Bill Modzel (Member # 22) on :

That stinks Mike. I'm lucky, we have a Mac shop in town here that will match catalog pricing if you don't need any hand holding. They had a Tiger party last week and I ran inot a bunch of my agency customers there. You should see the High Def stuff on that 30" screen. It looks like your looking into one of those old 3D Viewmaster things.

Rick my man. I'm glad that your happy with your Dell but if you showed up here and offered to trade even for my 5yo G4 I'd still not trade you! Even if I kept my 19" Viewsonic monitor! [Cool]

Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

Yeah Bill, I have to order *everything* in here.. it sucks. There's no one nearby that carries higher end computers or electronics so unless I can arrange a demo while I already have plans to be in Vegas or Phoenix, I buy a lot of stuff having never even seen it in person and just hope it's what I'm looking for. [Smile]

The machine left Phoenix at 2:30 this morning, I'm gonna guess the truck just rolled into town (allowing 7 hours for a 3 hour drive) so by the time it gets sorted at the local FedEx distribution center it might be here right after lunch. [Smile]

See, this whole tracking thing is flawed. It lets the impatient people (like me) drive themselves nuts checking their package status every couple hours. If that information wasn't available we could just live in oblivion. [Smile]

YEah! it's here! [Smile] actually im typin on it right now.. geez i gotta retrain my hands now after being so used to a laptop keyboard!

First opinion is this machine is AWESOME! I miss the scroll wheel on the mouse while surfing but other than that I think I can deal. [Smile]

Man I love it.. opened the box, set the unit on the desk, plugged in all of 4 cables (power, keyboard, mouse, ethernet) turned it on and it instantly found the internet connection, the Windows laptop and the inkjet printer over the network without any configuration.

I cant believe how much bigger the 17" LCD is than the 15" laptop LCD I'm used to, and the display is sooo smoooth and clear, the color is awesome, and OSX lets you set the desktop wallpaper to change on its own so I have it rotating through my photos every 5 seconds - it's a kinda nice feature.

I plugged in the canon 20D digital camera and the machine identified it and transfered images without ever asking for a driver. It downloaded 250 8 megapixel images in under 2 minutes - beautiful.

Can't wait til I really get into using it with photoshop and illustrator.

Mike, you can use a scroll mouse on a Mac with no problems. I hated the Mac mouse and keyboard so I sold them on ebay. I currently have a Logitech keyboard and a Microsoft optical scroll mouse on my Mac. They work great and don't require software installation of any kind. The Mac is fully capable of right-click options, but you won't see them with the single-button mouse.

I remember that I did have problems opening the DVD drive because you have to use a keyboard button to open it, and the Logitech didn't seem to work. I just made a shortcut up at the top right of the screen which opens and closes the drive. Works great. I found the shortcut (probably a script) in a folder somewhere on the Mac. It just needed to be installed.

This open-the-DVD-with-the-keyboard "feature" is one of several things you have to put up with when you use a Mac. I remember when they once decided to have no power switch on the tower - just on the keyboard. So, if the keyboard wouldn't respond, and you had to reboot, you were under the desk unplugging it from the wall!

Since when did the Macs become the dark side? That was our line. Kinda like the Democrats switching the blue and red states.

Mike. I have a Logitech cordless two button/scroll wheel mouse that works great. Sure don't miss that usb cable and the wheel has me hooked for sure.

Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :

Sweet! I just plugged in my IBM ergonomic mouse and it works great.. feels much better than the mouse that comes with the iMac.. and it has a cool illuminated scrollwheel to boot. [Smile]

Russ, there's no DVD drive to open on this machine, you just push a disc into the slot and it loads. To eject it you can use the eject button on the keyboard or drag the drive icon into the trash can... or right-click on the icon and choose "Eject".. pretty effortless any way you look at it.

I'd agree with Dan here about the iPod......hooked up to some nice powered speakers you've got the ultimate tune machine.

I've been running OS 10.4 for a week or so, the Spotlight feature is awesome!

Nobody seems to remember back when Billy Big Buck's from Redmond basically robbed another guy of his OS and named it DOS...how inspiring. Then later basically stole the whole MAC GUI and named it WINDOZE 3.1. Check out the movie Pirates of Silicone Valley!

As it goes most times these days, the guy with the biggest wallet won that court battle.

I for one would rather spend time learing more about Design software than firewalls and anti-virus, or simply sitting there wondering "why does this new POS keep crashing."

-c-ya...... off to buy more black shirts!

I need to replace my other computer about now, and I know a guy that's in charge of interfacing 1500 or more computers at a school, maybe a college. He always has free copies of software given to him, and said that if I got a Mac, he would "cover me up" with free software, including Corel 11. I know that was the last version of Corel available for Mac, but here's my question:

He was saying that the Mac is so much more fluid for creating things, and I thought, cool. But upon thinking further, I realized my creation is done with pen and ink, then scanned in. The computer cleans it up, stores it, etc etc.
I can see where the Mac would help with animation or something, but would it be that much improvement in my situation?
