My brother owns a local "Doc n, the Box".
He is having problems with patients standing out in front of his facility, on his property, smoking and throwing cig butts everywhere.

He is wanting a sign stating that "Ambucare PC is a Tobacco Free facility, and the use of any tobacco is forbidden on the grounds...
Please no smoking, or something the like...
He simply does not want folks smoking on his property..

This sign is going to be, I guess around 18" x 24" and I am not limited to one sign..

I don't want to crowd the thing, and I also don't want to be rude with it....

Has anyone ever made a similar sign with some tact ?
Any advise on wording would be greatly apprecited...

Thanks.

When I want to be firm but non-confrontational, I'll put a funny cartoon caracter on the sign, perhaps an animal smoking, then the worded message can be real firm, but they are laughing at the cartoon.

It helps to have one of those tall tubular ciggarette ashcans where people can PUT the butts as they walk up and read the sign...

Mabey the sign above it could say:

'This is a smoke free facility inside and out...
besides, we don't come to your place and throw used syringes on the ground . . . .'

'Thank you for depositing your butts here...as long as your butt is here, please refrain from smoking on this property.'

And a formally nice option:

'Thank you for not smoking in or around our facility. Please do not litter. An ashcan has been provided for disposal.'

The tubular ashcan looks similar to chiminea but very extended..it has a fat bowl shaped bottom which you fill about half full of sand, and it has a long slender neck with a hole in the top of it for dropping butts...

Even if butts are still burning, there is very little oxygen due to the design in the bowl. They come in very attractive styles as well and I'm sure you've seen them around hospitals, malls, stores, etc. as they are becoming very popular....

A lot of people will throw butts on the ground if there is no where to deposit one when they walk up . . . .

For the health and safety of our patients, smoking is strictly prohibited on our grounds. Thank you for not smoking.

"No Smoking"

He should probably put one at each entrance to his driveway. Maybe something like "Entering a smoke free area" with the no smoking symbol.

And a "No Smoking" sign at the front of his box office with a butt can of some sort.

The facility & grounds are tobacco-free.

If we see you smoking, we will assume you are on fire & call the fire department. [Smile]

I have a nice one at my door - "DO NOT SMOKE HERE" - 'cause I mean it.

I made some for some company trucks that weren't quite so rude - "Please don't kill your fellow employees, or you'll have to do their work, too".

I like Kissy's idea... with a can.

Install ash cans, as Sheila said. Then the simple NO SMOKING sign might depict a pair of disgusting, carbon-coated lungs.

My shop sign says..
" of course you can smoke...
just dont do it here"
no need to be polite

I charge customers $5 a pop for butts they leave

We've had this topic before, and I will therefore repeat myself since my opinion hasn't changed.
I have learned that the word "Please" seems to give people an option, it is meant as a friendly word, but an addict will misinterpret it emotionally.

So I advise people not to use it.

Ding ding ding we have a winner.

Anything that starts with "Please" is just a suggestion. Drop that one word and you have a command.

Leonard:

I know a smoker or two who hate their addiction. If they were offered help quitting in the right place...at the right time...they might just take it.

Maybe the sign should say something along the lines of...

Need help quitting?
Enquire within.

Please deposit all extinguished cigarettes in the receptical provided.

Had an order a few years ago for some coroplast signs:

NO IFS OR BUTTS

I used casual lettering and added a few butts as illustration for those who can't (won't) read...

I like Michael's approach: charge them five bucks per butt [Rolling On The Floor]

Ash cans? The local doc on the box here had them out front and it was an implied invite to smoke right there. The none smokers had to wade thru the gas chamber to get to the door.
Today, no ash cans, and signs that say
NO Smoking This is a smoke free campus.

Straight and to the point, but polite...

"Thank you for respecting our smoke free campus (with no smoking symbol).

Or the one I really like...

"If we see you smoking we will assume you are on fire and will take appropriate action" (with no smoking symbol of course). [Rolling On The Floor]
