Here goes ... pick from these!

We (Sue,Vicki and myself) had a hard time selecting just ten for you to chose from.

They are NOT listed in our order of preference.

List them #1 to #10 and add your comment why you vote the top one.

Voting finishes April 2nd. I will post the results then.

The "Winner" will receive an e-mail file of the SOTM "Certificate" complete with their name and the sign suitable for printing and framing. Thank you Don Coplen for designing it.

#3 is my vote.....#7 ran a very close second...

Number seven grabs my attention. Cool stuff!

I like the balance and use of all elements together. Gold is ALWAYS cool!

Number eight gets my second place vote. I like the way the frog pokes through the sign! Nice stuff!

Thanks for the eye candy!
I can't choose.
That's like asking what's the best tool ... well if I want to drive a nail it aint my kick-ass jigsaw... and my really nice socket set doesn't help cut a board very well.

Each is an example of a great tool for what it is ... (Wow, those kick butt)

I can't see the cute frog at the rock quary and the digging robot might scare people at the winery but are near perfect where they are.

Sorry, I just can't choose, let alone try to explain why ...

wow, that's some nice work there

Thanks, for putting it together

My vote goes to no.1

A true advertising design at work here.

I like the way the sign projects are being judged,..By sign people & not letting the name known of the makers before the judging.

Posted by Duncan Wilkie (Member # 132) on :

I'm with Mark, I can't choose just one. The projects are so different and each seems so individually appropriate.
Thanks for showing some great stuff!

Posted by Ian Stewart-Koster (Member # 3500) on :

#3- variety of colour, variety of contrast, humour factor, out-of-ordinary layout all tied in cohesively...(wish it was me who thought it up & did it!)

But all are good in their field. It's interesting how a good sign can be made or broken by a good or bad photo of it.

Well done folks!

edit to add:
2nd choice #7, for reasons mentioned by others, plus the thought to use the main word and break out of the boundaries set by the panel, as well as the thought to be extravagant and use THREE posts to hold the sign up, which suits it so well visually
3rd choice the robot of Dan's for its uniqueness amongst a myriad of other adjectives of approval!

It's very much apples & oranges- as in asking "what is a sign"... but I like #4 and #5 (as well as all the others in their places)

Posted by Denis E. Renaud (Member # 4610) on :

#3 is really an attention grabber. That's my pick

Posted by Mark Stokes (Member # 5351) on :

sign 7 gets my vote because of its class and elegance.

3. is second as it is colorful and fun looking and the truck toon is hand done.

5. is 3rd becuase it is totally different

All are great no disrespect to the others

Posted by Bob Rochon (Member # 30) on :

#5

It fits well in the 3-5 second rule, not to mention it most likely can be seen from far away, and.....if that doesnt grab your attention, then your either blind or dead. [Rolling On The Floor]

A beauty contest of signs kinda makes me uncomfortable. It's like trying to choose between cheesecake and chocolate.
But I like #7 the best.
The colors work, it's simple yet elegant, the installation is attractve, and any time I see someone using Arthur's Alphabets it just plain makes me feel good.
#4 would be my second, #6 my third, #8 my fourth.
My brain hurts.
Love....Jill

My first pick would be entry 7.
I find the sizes of the text compliment theach other and fit the format well. It pleases me to see some well done hand drawn letters also. I like the letters breaking out of the defined boundaries of the sign shape. This design could also be modified to accomodate a double faced sign with some work.

Posted by Philip Steffen (Member # 2235) on :

For a flat sign, #6 is great,

BUUUT, my vote goes to #7

Posted by Sheila Ferrell (Member # 3741) on :

I really like and appreciate ALL of them and the work, imagination and time involved in them, but in order of my least favorite to numero uno:

10. #5
9. #1
8. #4
7. #10
6. #8
5. #9
4. #6
3. #2
2. #3

Number 1 pic: #7 ~ Lot of pleasing elements of a dimensional sign: Dimensional letters, nice cut-out shape, pictorial-(either dimensional or hand-painted) and a different approach to post-installation arrangement.

7!

#1 Best effective advertising
#2 Best sandblasted sign
#3 Best original artwork
#4 Best carved insert
#5 Best original 3D creation
#6 Best flatpainted sign
#7 Best...Letterhead ideal(if there is such a thing)
#8 Best unusual idea
#9 Best corporate elegance
#10 Best handcarved lettering

For nothing else but personal taste I choose then in this order

10. #10
9. #2
8. #3
7. #5
6. #1
5. #9
4. #8
3. #4
2. #6
1. #7

Oh yeah....we're creative & have got to do things different... [Razz]

They are all great....but....
#9 hasn't been mentioned yet and I love the colors & stately elegance. I really want to see a close up of the medallion. It looks gorgeous!
#5 & #8 are fun!!!!

You didn't make it easy! I have to go with #8. One of the main things a sign has to do is get your attention. Then you read it. #8, with the three posts did that. Every sign you have listed is capable of winning, this one caught my eye instantly.

Posted by Nancie W. Phillips (Member # 3484) on :

I like #3 the most (COLOR!) & #8 next...

Posted by david drane (Member # 507) on :

#4. Sharp, clean and highly legible.

Posted by Joe Rees (Member # 211) on :

I had a lot of trouble comparing these entries. They're all too good! If the contest were catagorized by material or genra or purpose my conclusions would have been very different. My only resort was to compare them to "what I wish I had done, or had in MY portfolio".

10.#9
9. #6
8. #4
7. #10
6. #7
5. #2
4. #3
3. #1
2. #5
1. #8

It was real hard choosing between 8 and 5. Both hit me hard because they are such unexpected treatments. On another day I may have reversed the order on those two, but I think it was the soft colors of the frog and the natural wood slab that swayed me in it's favor.

Posted by Donald Thompson (Member # 3726) on :

To me it depends if #3 is hand done or digital printed
I like #7 the best with #3 in second.
If #3 is all hand done then I would choose it

Posted by Mark Neurohr (Member # 2470) on :

To tuff to call. All Excellent and very pleasing to the eye.

Gotta go with #3, it just did something to me the first time I saw it. OUTRAGIOUS!

(Besides, I really like TOONS)

I'll use my first post to vote for #5. I love it. If it were sold as an action figure I would stand it on top of my monitor. #7 would be my second choice, and #8 my third.

Posted by Suelynn Sedor (Member # 442) on :

My vote is #7, #8, #6 & #9 in that order.

The talent here is unbelievable!!

I think more people would vote if this was set up as a poll. And then the opinions of others wouldn't sway our vote.

Great job Jon, this is fun!

Suelynn

Posted by Jon Aston (Member # 1725) on :

I agree with Suelynn about the talent and the notion of voting via the BB's polling application.

However, I haven't voted (yet) because trying to decide between all of these amazing entries makes my brain hurt...plus we still have some time.

I can't choose between 7 & 8. They are both fantastic as are all the others. The frog is adorable and yet not too cartoonish, I love the wood. The Winery sign is flat out gorgeous.

7, but they are all terrific!

#1 hit me the hardest, although they all are very nice.

[Cool]

I am torn between #7 & #8.

7 has the classic beauty, but 8 shows lots of character.

I think all of the entries are wonderful and shows the talent that is out there!

Congratulations to all of the finalists, you did a great job!

My votes are... 7, 8, 5, 3, 2, 6, 4, 1, 10, 9.

My vote goes to a fine piece of work. The post treatment is outstanding. I like the colors because they all work together. The letter style for "Winery" is clean yeat has a slightly understated sense of flair and the way it goes over the edge of the sign is a neat touch.

I don't like the ornament at the bottom. It looks "plunked" and a little out of place. The sub copy is a nice clean style very suitable for this type of copy but could have been better arranged.

I like the illustration at the top but would like to have seen those come outside the circle. I also don't like the ornament treatment, either.

The positives far out weighed the negatives on this job. It is an impressive piece.

Thanks for running this, Jon.

Uggghhh...

My brain is hurting again. They really all are truly exquisite.

I think I've got to go with #1.

Congratulations to all contestants - and thanks Jon (and Sue and Vicki), for reviving and running the contest.

Just a little overlap of the cartoon over the lettering, but it doesn't hurt it...good dimensional effects throughout.
Original, wild and colorful cartoon.
Vibrant colors, clean paint and airbrush work and a little "outside of the square".

My vote.

Dang I like all of them, but the truck layout really hits me. I hate to vote for just one, but no. 3 gets my vote this time.

#6 for me. Flat or not, I love the lettering, & how it extends into those ornaments. Beautiful! I wish the picture showed the color a bit better, tho.

Posted by Jane Diaz (Member # 595) on :

8 for me.

Posted by Ron Costa (Member # 3366) on :

#3 is my first choice. Grabs my attention like a smile from a pretty stranger. The color and designed balance work well. Assuming this is the rear of the body, it would be interesting to see how the doors were treated.
#5, my second choice, is a jawdropper. This will elevate the clients name and location to landmark status. Says "who" and "where" in a BIG way!

At least for this morning!!

Yep, I agree with this hurting my brain! Maybe in the future the poll would be a good idea, with LESS CHOICES, maybe 5? And NO results can be seen til the end?

You outta see me in the ice cream store trying to decide...!!! [Roll Eyes]

And after looking at this first set of choices, there's no way I'll ever be able to enter anything!!
