Since the day I opened my doors I've been called "SignLady". No one knew my name but it travelled fast that there was a new sign shop in town and a "lady" owned it. After 5 years, most people still don't know my name- just "SignLady".

Just a twist on the same idea ....but are you a person who GIVES nicknames??
I don't really know why I give certain people nicks but . . .sometimes it's just 'cause I like to play and be silly. . .
My oldest daughter, Erica I always called "Hannah" and usually used it when directing her into the truck, or a chair: 'Hop in Hannah!' She is also still known by everyone as 'Rica' or 'Rica Gia' (her middle name is Gia) which I always called her anytime I was'nt calling her Hannah.
Emily is always 'Amah-layiah' which is just a fun way to stretch out her name and I was actually using it years before I found out that this was partly the Greek pronunciation. And she also goes by 'Em'.
~Lot'sa cute nicks for neices & nephews and kids at church who are now teens and I STILL call them by my-given nick:
Charity became 'Cheech'..less syllables I guess and not many girls with a 'ch' sound in their name...
Mara, my niece - I always call 'Too-mara'(take off on tommorrow)
Nephew Jessie is 'Jittybayree' or 'Jitty' because of a mentally retarded guy I know named Jessie Berry who pronounces his own name this way . . .
My niece, Loren was and is always Keesh because of 'quiche lorraine'(even though she's now grown and married)
Stephanie is 'Stefawn'
Brandon is 'Branded'
Austin is 'AustinTexas'
Wayne is 'WayneBrain' (because he's kind'a goofy and it's better than 'lamebrain' and still rhymes...
Wayne's mom always wears her hair in a braid that's way past her butt so I call her 'Hop-sing' (like the cook-guy on Bonanza)
Dozens more . . .(if someone does'nt like the nick I give them I don't use it though....but I probably still THINK it, lol
I think I primarily do this in order to simply REMEMBER names which I am bad about forgetting...

Jagoff (my husband's pet name for me) Weezie (my middle name is Louise) Boobie Bubsie Signlady, Paint lady, Gimme-some-kind-of-sign-girl(by a fav. customer) Bobbie-yep, that is my nick name since I was little.

Believe it or not - Joe.
Nobody knows my real name is Wayne Joseph Rees. Feels real weird to even type it, and I always know I'm in trouble if someone calls me by it. I don't use my first name because Wayne is my Dad. Thank God we had different middle names or I would surely have grown up being called Junior, or worse, Wayn-ey. <shudder>
Just don't call me Joey please, only my Mom can get away with that. Joseph doesn't sit well with me either - ruined in the 2nd grade by a particularly gangly pigtailed cootie machine who relished in calling me "Jofus". <sudders again>

Posted by Karen Wunch (Member # 3577) on :
My nick? "MoonLite"
Funny, I picked that one myself, the first time I chatted ANYwhere. 'Moon' coz I was born under a full one and love da LUNAcy of it ever since, & 'Lite' because LIFE is should be less filling and humor should be lite-hearted. I'm ALL about FUN!
It's true. I've met people here in chat and Letterville I'd NEVER know by their 'real' names...and to me? They'll always be.... Bushie, OneShot, Peaches, Kai, DrCas, or...whatever. It does NOT mean disrespect. It's a good thing.
Nicks are GREAT. They're the name WE conceive of Ourselves, NOT the one our parents gave us before they knew us.
There's a good thing in that: naming ourselves, WHEN we finally KNOW ourselves...or admit to knowing how much we don't know, but are willing to accept, about ourselves. ;o) ... OR how the local 'hood or businesses conceives us. That's kewl, too.
Frankly? Call me anything. Just Call ME if you need a good sign. *S*

Some of my friends here have some good ones too. Scrap Iron, Ricko, Roscoe, Boman,Zeke, Jethro, Moe, The Gift, Dr Squat, Bigman,Goose,Hoot, I could go on. I think most of them dont know their real names anymore. I know when I played softball, if you called me john everybody would look around like, Who the hell is john? Thats Tater!
Posted by Kissymatina (Member # 2028) on :
Same thing here John. My pap always called me Scooter or Scoot. We have what we call "the extended family" which is a friend of mine's parents and everyone who call them mom & dad (in all, over 50 "kids"). There is a "core" group of the extended family, mostly the "kids" they are closest to.... besides me, there is Fudd (their real kid) Bubba, Dream, Uncle Chick, Yogi...you get the idea.
Some strange things I've been called... besides Kissymatina (my uncle gave that to me years ago), my cousin's son called me Bup which he later changed to Tia. Aunt Kiss has always been a popular one too, guess Rs are hard for kids to say.

In elementary school it was duckie, still not sure why. Later on it became YMIER, pronounced yaymer, it came from an acronym I wrote on my hardhat YMIER, which stood for 'whY aM I hERe'. Now you can me anything you like, just don't call me late for dinner.
