We have a restaurant customer that would like us to make a display with a 4' x 8' chaulkboard. Any suggestions for a source?

Check the yellow pages for a school supply place, they should have what you need.
Or....you can get chaulkboard paint at places like Home Depot and you can paint it yourself.
I donno how it might turn out if you attempted to paint a 4' by 8' piece of material.....

Dean,...like michael said, I would go with school supply source on prefinished 4x8's... they're gonna have wood or metal trim and such.
The chalkboard paint does work well for smaller boards, but not well applied in cold weather, needs to dry and cure longer than regular paint, (IMHO)...
and.... I haven't found a way to keep vinyl graphics in place on chalkboards...hand lettering on chalkboards has worked for me but it's difficult.
I always enjoy seeing the beauty in restaurant chalkboards, when hand Chalk Lettered by the folks on site....
Most of times I've made A frames, or wall mounts, and Logo panels & frames, etc. that include the chalkboard area....
And...not to forget dry erase boards...they're sure easier to make as displays, but not near as vibrant chalk colorwise....
I can reply on low cost dry erase 4x8 panels, if needed.....

Haven't used it in a long time but they used to have screen printing inks for that, I'm sure it could be thinned and sprayed

For my project, I was looking for a 4'x8' piece too, but the job shrank considerably and I ended up using Krylon chalkboard spray paint. ($4.00ea) I purchased it at Walmart, where they also had roll/brush-on paint in a can. ($7.00ea) The process was easy and looked great.
*note* After turning it over to my client, they mentioned that when they used a wet rag to clean it, some of the paint rubbed off. They were warned, but somebody didn't pay attention...

Here in the UK I've seen High pressure laminate boards used (like a ceramic)in black , and sandwiched with a fibreboard in between. Gives a forever black matt surface suitable for chalk or postermarkers, wet wipe or solvent cleanable( depending on the pens used) Also will take vinyl or painted graphics nicely Not sure of a supplier but here were made my SCOLABOARD
