I was wondering... if you tint leaf size with yellow when gilding with gold, what colour do you use when gilding with copper or silver (aluminum)?
Thanks, Dallas

White for the aluminum, imitation gold for the copper. Although it really doesn't matter. The purpose of tinting is to be able to see what you are doing when applying the size and not miss any spots. A lot of folks say that tinting helps hide any "holidays" when gilding...it doesn't. A holiday on 23K sticks out like a sore thumb regadless of what the size was tinted with. Seams showing are inevitable when using the heavier leaf like aluminum or copper.

I often mix American vermillion into my size and intensionally let the cracks show to obtain a more antique appearance.
