Hey heads! What sort of tape do you all recommend for hingeing vinyl on a banner? Not the application tape but the tape that keeps the graphic in place. I usually use something from officemax or staples & they either refuse to peel off or they leave a glue residue behind. Masking tape doesn't seem to be strong enough. This only happens on banners - all other substrates I have no problem. What do you think. Thanks!!!!!!

Camille- If you'll wipe the banner surface with plain 'ole rubbing alcohol first, let dry- we just use regular masking tape and never have a problem.

I always use rubbing alcohol but this graphic is 10' long and masking tape didn't seem to hold it in place enough for my liking - maybe i'll reinforce the maskig tape with the stronger tape. Thanks!!!

Camille,
Also, use wider masking tape (2" or so for better hold) and a name brand tape (for fewer problems with adhesive from the masking tape coming off).
Not that i'm any expert but i just learned this from a Rob Iver's video.
Thanks, Steve

I'll agree with Linda and add that when I need something really strong, I reach for the duct tape!
Only time I've had trouble with tape leaving the adhesive behind is; when the tape is old or the surface is too hot.

There is a blue, 3M #2090 that is a great tape. It is specifically made for safe release and no residue. It's not cheap but it is a great product .
I use the cheapest masking tape for most applications but this stuff has saved the day on cold surfaces where regular tape just fell off and it has never left any adhesive behind even on hot vehicals. I would gess it would solve you banner problem.

i use 2" application tape

It works OK on vehicles and aluminum but, be cautious about using the blue "3 day" or "7 day" tape on banners....especially white ones. I have had it to leave marks on them. Now I use 3m plain masking tape for banners.

I do like Jimmy does, 2" or 4" application tape has always worked for me.

also......it you're doing it wet, the fluid might be making your tape come loose.
I just use plain old masking tape too...and sometimes double layer it for strength.

what curt says....it works....also REAL AUTOMOTIVE MASKING TAPE, not a BIG LOTS knock-off brand....ONLY! 3M, MARTIN-SENIOUR, are the best out there.....2" masking tape will hold anywhere. you cant hang vinyl/app tape and backing paper with 3/4"........

3M/Scotch 233+ (2inch)
Not only does it stick great and not leave residue...but it's a nice, purty bright green.

I use 1" masking tape & sometimes double it up or use 2" as needed
also, if this 10'banner is giving you problems with the tape not holding the hinged vinyl, I would guess that maybe you have an easel that you are working in & gravity is fighting against the tape? I used to do my banners that way, & someday hope to set myself up to do so again, but right now I do them flat on a table. If you are doing this one vertical, maybe you could try it flat to assist with the tape being able to hold.

3M blue painters tape unless your doing wet then get 3m high-tack painters tape (I got some from a painter that used it for concrete, masonry, etc.) 1" normally bigger stuff 1 1/2" or 2"

I only use imported "Manchetti" masking tape from Italy. Its pricey at $25.00 a 10 yard roll but it works flawlessly. Unlike other commercial tapes that are cream, blue, green colors, this tape has reproductions of Michael Angelo’s famous painting on the surface.
I can usually upsell every job I do when I show the client what great lengths we go to when creating their sign masterpiece.
You should see what I get for our imported cement blocks from Vienna.

Bob...I hope you don't mind me asking...but would you be willing to share the name of your supplier of "Manchetti" tape?
I have been looking for a way to get more money for my banners and this sounds like an excellent method of doing so.
Heck..I might even be able to convince them to become a merchant here and Steve will send me a check for $50 U.S.
Up until now I have only been cleaning my banners enough to ensure that the vinyl will stick to them without the premask lifting the graphics as I pull it off. Done on a vertical wall and hinged with 3/4" masking tape it has worked fine, but I can see how buying a superior brand of masking tape will impress my customers.
If you would prefer to divullge your supplier's name in private, please feel free to e-mail me the information. I promise to not share it with anyone else. We could keep it our little secret! Posted by Ray Rheaume (Member # 3794) on :
Camille,
I use the 3M green tapes. They can be readily found at most automotive part stores.
Many of the masking tapes you'll find at Staples, Wal-Mart, Home Depots and other chain stores are designed with less adhesive capabilities and break down from chemicals easier. Automotive grade tapes are a little thicker, more agressive and also resist chemicals better.
Hope this helps... Rapid

and another vote for the green 3M 1 1/2 inch tape- it's good stuff for when you need that extra bit of stickiness!
(and if you somehow have extra time on your hands, you can doodle the Sistine Chapel on it before you pull it off. Oh, scraps of it are reusable too!)

I don't use any tape. (Wet application.)

First of all, if your tape is having problems sticking, I would be very concerned with the surface of your banner material. Blue 3M tape only! NEVER get the "Duck"tape brand or any imposters. Tape a long strip 6-10" across the tops and bottoms of your graphic where you need to hinge back to. If necessary, cut your graphic at strategic places so you don't have to handle a large section.
Camille, are you hinging from the top only - or are you hinging the "middle" of the graphic and working to the right, and then to the left?

WOW! Thanks all - I'll have to try the masking tape - the only masking tape I had was skinny and my fear was that it wouldn't keep the graphic in place. I do all my applications on a horizontal table and hinge from the top or bottom. Sometimes I find the cheaper clear tapes stick to fiberbrite too - i'll try the 2" tapes- thanks again!!!

and another vote for the Scotch 3M 233+ GREEN tape. Thats all we use for hinging, paint masking, etc.

What is this... class picture week? First Kissy's new look, and now Jerry??? Who's next? (I could make a couple of suggestions, but I don't know if it would help those suggested.)
