I've finally got my horse....
His name is Dusty, he's a very sweet Arab cross.
 -
 - Here he is running around the back pasture...he seems to be having a ball!

That's fantastic A - I know how much you wanted one. Great name by the way, that's what I named my German Shepard/Chow.

Dusty is about 18 years old (he has that groove thing on his teeth)
He used to belong to the father of the gal I got him from.
He had him for about 7 years (got him from an auction) and she inherited him from her father who died about 7 years ago.

He is good on trail rides with other horses, but alone he spooks a lot.

I understand that is typical of Arab crosses, they are very aware of their surroundings and spook easily.

I plan on doing a lot of ground work with him before riding him....after being off my feet so long (toe's all healed now, btw) I'm not in shape enough to be riding a spooky horse, and it's been 15+ years since I'd rode last!
I hope we both get used to each other and the activity will be good for both of us!

I spent the afternoon with a friend and her horses, she taught me a lot about lungeing.

He comes up readily when he sees us, is easy to catch, likes to be brushed but doesn't like his feet touched....this I will have to work on as his feet need to be cleaned often to be healthy.

If necessary, I'll have to get a farrier to help me with his feet.

A:)

Hey A,

I am so happy for you! It is great to see a dream come true. You deserve the goodness that seems to be coming your way!

I have no advice on horses. I am sooooo allergic to them. Hey, could be worse. I could be allergic to dogs! LOL!

Good for you, A! Can't wait til our paths cross again!

Congrat's to you both. Deb and I are still searching for a property, but soon...

I hope we can find such a nice friend. He is great!

A, I use the lungeing (sp?) to get Jesse to respect me for any behavior type problem. It works very well for cleaning the hooves.

First I lunge her. Then stop, do my walk towards her, pat her, walk away from her waiting for her to follow, then attempt to lift a hoof, and if she doesn't respond, she gets lunged again. I repeat the above until she respects the commands and gives in easily. Works like a charm! Have fun!

I can just see the next bundle of painted windows with lavender fields, and an arab horse in the background of each!
Enjoy him, and learn A!
