John-
off the top of my head I cant remember exactly what that face looks like, but three faces that might work for ya are Uppen Arms, Americana Dreams Condensed Upright and Dymaxion Script. Each has a heavy connector stroke along the baseline that gives a look of cast metal.

There is one called "Magneto" that might work. Don't know.
My Dad's was a 60 something model but if I recall, it looked something like that..

John. As you know, anything on a 56 Chevy wouldn't have been a "font" per se, however there is one font that has the "feel" of that letterstyle.

Here is a vectorized version of the actual valve cover decal used on a 63 Chevy (canadian model, OEM or NOS versions not available anywhere), with the word Chevrolet below in a font called "Raceway". Same feel but not anywhere close to being correct.

The word Bel Air on 55-57 Chevys was different even from that. Also there were a couple of different layouts for the word Bel Air. The script on the quarter panel was different from the one used on the dash.
