thats the question- how many coats primer do you use? Do you paint one coat before sizeing & leafing?- could you size right to the foam if it were smooth enough?

Phil,

Generally speaking, the surface of the gild is as good as the surface you put it on.

If you do a search on this topic you will have enough reading material for a week [Smile]

Phil,

I totally agree with Joe on the smoothness of the surface.

I would not personally gild right on the foam. I always put two coats of primer on the letters. The thing is, you don't want the size to be absorbed too much into the foam.

As Joe says, there is lots of other posts on this.

Thanks,
Steve

Philip

I use 15 and 18lb HDU. On all of our signs we route a ¼ inch cove cut around the entire perimeter of the sign and apply 23k gold leaf.

After routing, I take 220 grit sandpaper and give the groove a few passes to knock off any high spots or burrs. Then its a minimum of two coats of 1 shot white sometimes three. I want to get the smoothes surface possible before applying the size, tinted with lemon yellow.
