i think the QUANTITY...is causin most of the problem. what version of font nav you using? older versions had that problem bad. i got 5.0.0 and sometimes it dont open a few fonts.... but i dont have near that amoutn of fonts on the hard drive. most of the time i will load corle 9 cd and search it for fonts....or my adobe fontpholio that is on another cd. or KEY FONTS cd.but i see no need to have more then a few hundred on the H/D.

I've been having that problem as well. I wonder if it has anything to do with Corel X4. I also get an Adobe Acrobat Distiller error message sometimes when using Font Navigator. At home I keep most of my fonts on the hard drive and at work we have it set up to search network drives. I'd like to find something that works better and is more stable.

I've downloaded Font Manager by Serif to see how I like it. It appears to be a lot more stable but the interface is more complicated than necessary.

I have the same problem with Bitstream and I have issues with Illustrator recognizing fonts sometimes. With Bitstream I think it has a problem whenever you try to read a Type 1 font and I think it may be related to memory on the PC as well. The other problem I'm having with Bitstream now is that it will only read down to a certain level in the font list and then it goes back to the begining of the list again. In other words, when I'm previewing the font Windsor and I go to the next one Wingdings, it displays the font Aachen again and there is nothing I can do about it so I can't preview anything beyond Windsor.........sometimes I just want to get my hammer and some nails and go to work with only those tools.......

With all due respects, Glenn, why would you have over 20,000 fonts?

I asked myself the same question. The total comes to 22,287.
Bought a few from LetterheadFonts, Adobe, Bitstream, House Industries and Monotype. Won a few from a Letterville drawing years ago as well as from an Advance Sign Supply and Expert Sign Supply open house drawings. Got 2500 of them from my Gerber Omega URW font disc. Downloaded a few freebies from AcidFonts, Smashing.Com and other similar sites. Got a bunch from various programs that had been installed over the years.
Its amazing what collects after 15+ years.
*forgot about the ones I bought from SignDNA. Good stuff!

I've got a huge number of fonts on the hard drive as well. I think a lot of them get there from software installs. Corel, Microsoft office, Adobe, etc. When you add up every wieght, italic, true type version, type one version, the numbers get astronomical.

I kinda like bitstream, it integrates very well with Coreldraw, and like others I have a huge collection of fonts on the server and install only as needed. I have been having issues with type 1 fonts once I started to switch computers to windows 7 64bit. This was giving real grief as we are a print shop as well as a sign shop and frequently reprint legacy files.
Did, however, find a solution -
From program list (not taskbar) right click on bitstream, go to properties, set compatibility mode to windows XP. A reboot may be necessary.

Glenn I have an archive of about 1.32gb of nothing but fonts I have collected since 1990 or so ,..every time I go to that folder with bitstream it crashes like the hindenburg,..I'm not gonna delete my fonts so I guess I'm gonna have to live without the navigator for now,...,

Tim, I had to check: 1.48 gig 54,592 files in 6,493 folders. mostly garbage...lol actually load less than 300 fonts and use at most 400
Bitstream has never had a problem with it other than the type 1 fonts with windows 7. Does take a while to find all the fonts fonts when first installed but doesn't crash once installed.
Oldest workstation is probably 5 years old running XP.

why do you all use a font manager anyway? windows does a great job of this with drop and drag, just asking?
Glenn you need to ditch about 21700 fonts

With us its a matter of convenience, multiple computers sharing an extensive archive of corel files. I used to load a standardized font library on each computer but if one workstation used a non standard font it created issues if the file was opened, (perhaps years later) on another workstation. With font navigator I don't have to bother, as long as any new fonts are saved in the font folder on the server, font navigator will install them on a workstation, and only if a file that needs them is opened. When opening a file that contains a font that is not installed there is only a small prompt window advising that the font is not installed and asking permission for bitstream to install it.

Mike -- you are the one. I prefer type 1 fonts, since I think they have less nodes and therefore plot smoother letters when the letters are large.
We have been having issues with X5 and fonts. I just downloaded the Service Pack 2 that sounds like it's full of patches.
