The Teachers: Denis Thompson, Damien Maiden, Kelsey Duncan and David Fisher (Tutor) and the assistance of Francis Douwes.

These students have completed stage 5 of their formal training at the college and are in their forth year of a four year apprenticeship in signwriting. The works shown are electives chosen and completed by the students. All these jobs are first attempts by the students in using the techniques involved.

Mylinda Duffy

Mylinda works for (?) in Rockhampton? on the central coast of Queensland. The first is a brushed oil painting copied from postcard sized artwork and is an exercise in texture and light.

The next is a backsprayed illuminated acrylic panel sprayed in automotive acrylic lacquer using airbrush, spotting gun and spray gun. All masking has been hand cut from either the protective masking sheet or application tape. The blends are sprayed with clear before and after the colour application in order to give a smooth blend and to eliminate the possibility of damaging the blend when chamoising back before spraying any following colours. The text effects were designed by her also.

Graham Moore

Graham works for Shannon Sign Company in Toowoomba
This first job is an exercise in gilding and illustrating, the vine leaf/scrolls have been gilded using varigated and 23k lea
f with matte hi-lights. The illustration has been freehand shaded by airbrush as has the background. The artwork is a composite of original and modified "borrowed" images.

Graham's other example shown here is a backsprayed illuminated panel sprayed in automotive acrylic lacquer using the techniques and equipment described above in Mylinda's backsprayed description.

Calixto (Tito) Gonzales

Tito works for Signmart in Brisbane.

The other piece shown here is the logo used by the band Pennywise, it has been glue chipped and gilded with a clear gilded outline around. The whole panel has then been backed up with drop black.

This job involves ... sandblasted area between the red panel and outline, sponged panels, blended panels and 23k gilded primary text and wing design with matte highlights.
The design comes originally from "The Atkinsom Plates" but has been modified with a few embellishments.

Peter Davies

Peter works for SmartSign in Logan City. This job features a glue chipped central design on acid and sandblast etched outlines, the photo was taken during production, unfortunately the piece was broken just prior to completion.

Ben works for Signs in Motion on the Gold Coast. The job shown here is his rendition of the logo used by his employer, the text is 23k leaf and the panel and brush have been sponged and stippled. The outline on the text "Quality Signmakers" was a computer cut mask and the rest brushed freehand including the blended block shade.
